Freshman ‘changes’ to Campus Superstar

When freshman musical theater major Khrista Jana White sang her first three notes on Sunday, whole sections of the audience gasped, while others in the audience muttered, “She’s a freshman?”

When she finished her song and her face came out of the trance the song had put her in, she smiled as the audience cheered. Some parts of the audience even gave her a standing ovation.

The judges agreed with the audience reaction, and after audience votes were tallied and the results came in it was no surprise that the Point Park University freshman became the 2008 Campus Superstar.

“All the contestants were super, but I am so happy my daughter won,” Stella White, mother of the 2008 Campus Superstar, said. “We’ve been waiting for this day.”

The search for the 2008 Campus Superstar began in November. Representatives went to area colleges and auditioned students who were singers to possibly participate in the Semi- Finals of the competition which were held on Feb. 28.

Of the 28 people picked to compete in the February competition 11 of those were from Point Park. After a long judging 11 finalists were chosen.

It began with several lectures and dedications about, and for, members of the Hillel Jewish University Center along with a performance from last year’s Campus Superstar, Nick Cosgrove, a student at Carnegie Mellon.

The performers walked onto the stage, on Sunday, after the lectures and dedications. Each section of the balcony on the second level of the Carnegie Music Hall, which was designated as student seating, screamed and cheered for their favorite performer, many holding signs in support. First to perform, through random drawing of numbers was Brian Matechen, also a Point Park student.

He strutted across the stage performing “It Takes Two” from the musical “Hairspray.”

Several ballads followed this performance leading up to White’s performance of “I Am Changing” from Dreamgirls. She walked on stage in her red dress, curled hair, and a big smile. As the band behind her began to play the star-like backdrop glistened behind them she let out several high notes. As her song went on, her voice continued to grow stronger as her body simultaneously moved with the emotion of the song.
