New plans for Market Square

The city is under rebuilding and so is Market Square. City officials have been trying to fix Market Square’s past problems of drug sales, crime and loitering, and they hope that Dunkin’ Donuts and a new wine bar will help restore its image.

Dunkin’ Donuts will be opening in the summer and will move into where the store Giggles formally was. Giggles was shut down after the owner was convicted for drug possession and possession of weapons, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Web site. (postgazette.com).

Along with Dunkin’ Donuts will be a new wine, cheese and dessert bar and will be going where the M&M Bar was. Alongside the new wine bar will be a new restaurant coming to Market Square. Moe’s Southwest Grill, which will serve southwest style food, will be moving in later this summer.

Dunkin’ Donuts is now trying to move in all around Pittsburgh. This Dunkin’ Donuts will be one of 105 shops that will move into Allegheny County. Dunkin’ Donuts will now be part of a battle with Crazy Mochas, Starbucks, Nicholas Coffee Co., Bruegger’s Bagels, and Einstein Bros.

“I love Dunkin’ Donuts but they are so hard to find. I’m happy there’s going to be one so close,” Andrew Haburjak, a senior criminal justice major, said.

Workers at Bruegger’s Bagels and Jenny Lee Bakery welcome the competition.

“We are excited for the competition, but we are not afraid of them because we have different foods and drinks that they don’t offer,” Shanay Doss, a shift manager at Bruegger’s Bagels, said.

“We aren’t afraid of the competition because have loyal customers, and they will always come back,” Regina Casey, the manager at Jenny Lee Bakery, said.

The new wine bar will be named Sante and it will serve French wines, cheese and desserts. They are hoping to open the bar in late May or early June.

“Downtown kind of dies around 7 p.m., and I think some of this new stuff will help that,” Josh Hedglin, a freshman cinema and digital arts major, said.
