USG discusses change

Pounded by student complaints that United Student Government (USG) does not accomplish enough, officials began staging a “State of the Student Body” address to not only list accomplishments, but also establish goals each year.

During the same meeting, President Carl Zappa, III said another goal is to examine and possibly overhaul the way USG establishes and funds clubs at Friday’s meetings.

Making students aware of their accomplishments has been a continuing problem for USG, secretary David Jacobs said. This may become easier if an idea presented by theater representative Adam Sapienza at the Jan. 23 meeting is carried out.

Sapienza addressed the idea of USG creating a State of the Student Body address. The idea would give everyone involved in the Point Park community a better understanding of the USG’s accomplishments throughout a semester.

“President [Paul] Hennigan does a ‘State of the University Address,'” Sapienza said. “I thought ‘why should we not do a State of the Student Body address?’ We could put out invites to the entire school.”

Sapienza said USG could present all of their accomplishments to the student body and administration in this one event. Members also talked about the event including USG’s ideas and goals for the future.

“It would be done professionally,” Sapienza said. “There would be a lot of thought behind it.”

Kevin Kauffman, media representative, brought up the idea of having the address at the end of the semester when USG elections are held. Kauffman said it could include a speech from Zappa.

Several USG members said that they liked the idea during the meeting. They also said the idea will be discussed further as a possibility for USG.

“It would be a great tradition to start and pass on,” Jacobs said.

Members also discussed changing the way USG deals with university clubs. Don Ruggery, criminal justice and law representative, brought up the concept of adding changes to the club systems.

“We are going to do some work with the clubs to try and revitalize the whole club system to get them more involved,” Ruggery said. “Actually, almost force them to get involved.”
