Amy Bittner offers options, job ‘hotspots’

During the Feb. 28 United Student Government (USG) meeting, a motion was made to impeach School of Business-at-Large Representative Lyndsay Monaco.Senator Jonathon Bucci motioned for Monaco’s impeachment and senior psychology major Veronika Panagiotou seconded the motion.”A lot of research went into the charges,” USG Press Secretary Meagan Stroud said. “During the meeting, following the movements made by senators, we decided we’ll hold an impeachment trial.”Stroud said, after senators conducted research, it was discovered that Monaco had missed ten legislative body meetings, five office hour dates, six communications committee meetings and three finance committee meetings. In addition to these allegations, Monaco has been charged with an ethics violation concerning the “misuse” of USG property, namely the USG office computer.Monaco, who has served over three semesters at USG, said she was shocked and disappointed by the ‘false’ accusations. She said she did not miss as many meetings as alleged, and said she had tried communicating with leadership to alter her committee meeting hours, as the meetings conflicted with her schedule. Additionally, Monaco said she was surprised by the charge of the ethics violation for “misusing” USG office’s computers, as, she said, ‘many’ senators also use the computers to check their personal e-mails and Facebook accounts.”More than anything, I am so upset at how this will damage all of the hard work I have put into this school and into myself as a young professional,” Monaco said. “Prior to this meeting, these issues hadn’t been brought up to me, which really shows a lack of professionalism.” Stroud said there had been a motion to censure Monaco during the Feb. 21 legislative body meeting; however, since Monaco was not present, the motion was tabled. During the Feb. 28 meeting, Stroud said the senators decided to move to impeach Monaco instead of pursuing a censure.Monaco will be given two weeks to prepare a defense for her Mar. 14 impeachment trial. Stroud said, during that time, President Pro-Tempore Heidi Schlegel will be investigating rules pertaining to the impeachment process. It will take a 3/4 majority vote to remove Monaco from office.”I am disappointed in leadership for not looking in depth to assure the allegations were valid,” Monaco said. “I have the [legislative body meeting] minutes to prove I was at seven of those 10 ‘missed’ meetings, and I plan to bring those as evidence to the trial.”**Please note Senator Lyndsay Monaco has not been proven guilty, and these are only charges presented against her.**
