One of the most important advantages any team could have is being able to play at home. Having a home turf close to campus allows teams to play in front of large crowds rooting just for them and gives any squad an undeniable advantage. That wasn’t the case in past years for the men’s and women’s soccer programs. The teams played a majority of their home contests in the past at Founders Field, which is more than 15 miles away from Point Park’s campus. With Point Park being a part of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) and traveling long distances to get to their road contests, the 28 minute drive to the stadium was not much of a break for the Pioneers. The long trip to the stadium also took its toll on the game’s attendances, as the Point Park men’s team, despite winning the conference tournament last season, drew almost 100 fans fewer at home than its opposition did when it was on the road. The women’s team drew significantly better, but they still could not average 100 fans a game. But now it appears that problem has been fixed, as the two teams will be calling Station Square’s Highmark Stadium home for the 2013 season. The close proximity of the stadium to the campus and the fact that tickets are free for Point Park students should attract much larger crowds than last year’s averages of 90 fans a game for the women’s squad and 78 for the men’s.This move is great for the programs and the University. Both teams are coming off of the best seasons in their history and appearances in the conference tournament finals, so it is fitting that they get rewarded with arguably the best stadium in the KIAC. The new stadium and their newfound success should also be a key factor in attracting more student athletes to Point Park in the future.Point Park now boasts two of the best soccer teams in all of the KIAC. Hopefully that and a brand new stadium will help raise attendance and excitement for this season.
