CAB makes changes, new student discounts

When senior Aja Smith is with her fellow Campus Activities Board [CAB] members, she feels as if the group is a second family. As the vice president of marketing, Smith used this feeling as inspiration for CAB’s new logo: a pineapple.“[I chose a pineapple] to represent how CAB is different but [has flavor] in the fruit bowl of Point Park,” said Smith, an advertising major. In its fifth year, CAB is improving with a new logo, new committees and, best of all, more student discounts. “Our students like CAB because we offer them fun, unique activities [and] events that are accessible for [their] busy schedule[s]. I think the students appreciate the fact that for a few hours they are more than welcome to let loose and have fun with the events we put on for them,” said Chelsea Behanna, executive director, in a follow up interview. While it is still fairly young, CAB depends highly on the student body of the University to make it successful.   “CAB encourages students to interact with us,” Behanna said.Behanna, a senior sports, art and entertainment management major, wants students to know that trying to make their requests or suggestions a reality is “why [they are] here.”Another way to help is by joining. CAB, originally one big club, has split up into several different committees, each with its own responsibilities, students can be involved with. The Spirit and Traditions Committee organizes the traditional events students have always looked forward to, such as the Halloween dance in October.Experience Pittsburgh arranges any Pittsburgh-themed activities such as discounted Pirates and Cultural District shows tickets, trips, and a possible future Segway Tour-something that CAB has never done in the past. “If students want a discount or coupon for a specific place, we can certainly contact the restaurant and try to see if they would like to partner up,” Behanna said in a follow up interview.Community Service allows students to get involved in a different way on or off campus from trips to soup kitchens or hosting a food drive. The Marketing Committee not only promotes CAB’s events, but ensures students are getting the information for them by posting on Facebook or Twitter and creating and distributing flyers and more.Special Events organizes the bigger treats students look forward to such as the upcoming concert series in Village Park in September or October . “Bands will be able to showcase different styles of music, and students can come to relax and enjoy,” said sophomore Kim Preslosky, the special events chair. There will be free food too, so keep an eye out for the official dates and then mark your calendars. All of these committees meet on a weekly basis at different times so students are welcome to join as little or as many as they want.CAB meetings are on the second floor of the Student Center.
