Clean out closets and spring fashion forward

Lights, camera, strike a pose! Casting calls, catwalks and networking will all be a part of the Point Park Fashion Club’s annual fashion show, featuring clothing raffles, best-dressed contests and COPA freshmen modeling clothing provided by the Fashion Club. The club is also holding a clothing swap Thursday where anyone interested in a bit of spring cleaning can rid themselves of unwanted apparel or trade it for something more stylish.“We really want to make students at Point Park aware that our club exists and get them involved and excited about fashion and style,” said Fashion Club member Madison Taylor.Richelle Szypulski, now a graduate of Point Park, created the fashion club last year. She had a true love of fashion and wanted to get people together who shared the same love and respect for it as she did. The current president and senior journalism major, Emily Bastaroli, has furthered the club’s development. “My favorite thing is the process of organizing everything and seeing all of our hard work fall into place,” said Bastaroli.Bastaroli became fascinated with fashion at a young age. Her mom worked Downtown, so she had a closet full of trendy clothing. Bastaroli always enjoyed playing dress up with her younger sisters, whether it be with her mom’s fancy clothing or bridesmaid dresses that were handed down through her family.Bastaroli’s sense of style and love for fashion has stuck with her throughout the years as well as her love for writing. Not only can she rock edgy clothing like black tops, skinny jeans, studded boots and flashy jewelry, but she can write a solid news story and is currently interning for WHIRL. Although Bastaroli has a busy life, she still makes time for her fashion club meetings every Tuesday night and these girls are nothing short of thrilled to put on their most anticipated event of the year. The fashion show will be held in the Lawrence Hall Ballroom on Thursday, April 17 from 6-9 p.m. There will be a casting call held on Thursday, March 27 from 3-5 p.m. at the JVH located on the second floor of Thayer for COPA freshmen to audition to be models for the show.“We are using specifically COPA freshmen to give them a sort of work experience role since none of them have the opportunity to audition for a show during their freshman year,” said club member Alexandra Perry.Interested COPA freshmen should come to the casting call in business casual attire and bring head-shots. Jeans and a T-shirt are acceptable. The club will be sending an email blast to every freshman in COPA, detailing the essentials. The fashion show will turn the ballroom into an elegant layout. There will be a T-shaped runway with seating all around it and facing the end of the runway will be a refreshment table, photo booth and networking table. Models will flaunt stylish clothing that the fashion club chooses, walk down the catwalk and strike a pose. The cost to come and watch the event is free, but donations are welcome. The guest speaker is Caroline Collins, who won this year’s Miss Laurel Highlands, a local beauty pageant.“Last year whenever we did the fashion show it went so much better than I could have ever imagined,” Bastaroli said. The Campus Activity Board (CAB) is also a large sponsor for the show this year. Their Public Relations Committee is working to provide marketing materials and promotional events to spread the news about the Fashion Show. CAB’s Special Events Committee is also working on decorations, activities for attendees and running the inner-workings of the event to make sure everything runs smoothly, according to CAB member Jenna Sulecki. She added that items from the Fashion Show will be raffled off and the money raised will go towards the Fashion Club so it can be put on more events in the future. The Fashion Club is also inviting students to clean out their closets and bring their gently used unwanted clothes to their clothing swap next Thursday, March 27 in room 702 of the Student Center. There will be snacks, music and clothes.
