Game, set, match

The Pioneers volleyball team was up two sets to one on Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) foe, and 19th ranked, Indiana University East. However it was unable to hold on, losing in five sets. This loss ended a chance at going 3-0 in the week after victories against KIAC foes Carlow University and Brescia University.“We need to stay strong and focused through all three games,” libero Alyssa Hall said in a phone interview Sunday. “IU East was the best team we played this week and especially then we need to stay strong and focused the whole game.”The week started with the Lady Pioneers rising up in the rankings moving up five spots to 31st and receiving votes to the top 25, their ultimate goal. While the week began well, the Lady Pioneers did not have the same power as they faced the Carlow Celtics, however, Point Park would prevail 28-26 to take the first set.“It was just a slow start with a lot of unnecessary errors,” outside hitter Lindsey Oberacker said in a phone interview Saturday. “Our mental focus was off and we had some unnecessary hitting and reception errors.”The Lady Pioneers used the momentum they had from the first set to sustain them in the second and third sets, winning 25-13 and 25-10.Winless Brescia was unable to compete with the Lady Pioneers, losing 25-10, 25-22 and 25-4. In the second set, Head Coach Mike Bruno sat many of his starters, and it took a while to adjust, however, the team was never in serious danger during the match.Point Park would drop the opening set to Indiana University East 25-18, but evened the match by taking the second set 25-21. It was clear in the third set that the Lady Pioneers had the momentum as they won 25-14.From there the Lady Pioneers were unable to close, losing the final two sets 25-17 and 15-10, their first loss in KIAC play.“We lost our spark,” Oberacker said. “We stopped doing the little things and that led to the big things not happening.”The win would have been the 300th in Bruno’s career.Point Park has a chance to give Bruno that win Thursday at Ursuline before the team comes home Saturday to play West Virginia Wesleyan College following the Lady Pioneer alumni versus Point Park Gold Team match. The Lady Pioneers will face Fairmont State Monday at 7 p.m. Matches will be played at the Student Convocation Center and admission is free with Student ID.
