Geary, Roddy rise up

Junior setter Katie Geary led Point Park University women’s volleyball with over 50 assists on Saturday to help the team win one of two games in a tri-match hosted by Wheeling Jesuit University. The Pioneers won three straight matches against West Virginia State University, which has not won a game yet this season.  This win came earlier in the day Saturday by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-12.  With this win, Point Park tied its season-high record of four consecutive wins on the schedule. Rachel Roddy, right side hitter and Ashley Zietak, middle hitter, both seniors, had eight kills in the matches with sophomore Lindsay Oberacker following close behind with seven.  Geary had 28 assists, five digs and four kills from her position of setter.  Defensive specialist, Amanda Ardinger led the team with 14 digs.  Zietak also had a team high of five total blocks of the team’s 12.  Point Park hit .500 in their last set to help the Pioneers beat West Virginia State. Saturday afternoon did nothape up quite as the morning did with a loss to host Wheeling Jesuit by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-20.  But to Point Park’s credit they battled in the second match losing by two and coming back within five points in the third match after the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions went on a 13-1 point lead, which lead was too great for the Pioneers to overcome. Roddy led Point Park in the attack with 12 kills in the game to add to her 11 digs and five assists.  Oberacker had eight kills while Zietack had seven kills to help the team with their total of 39 kills against the Wheeling Jesusit Cardinals.  Geary had 28 assists in the team’s total of 35 and added to five digs and four kills.  Sophomore defensive specialist Margaret Gilloogy had 12 digs at defensive specialist with Ardinger adding another 10 digs at the position. The Pioneers are now 11-4 overall and 1-3 in true road matches and 10-1 everywhere else.  Out of their 10 wins, four have been at home at the Greentree SportsPlex.  These four wins are part of a 16 game winning streak at home for Point Park.  The losses on the road were against the nationally-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics team at Shawnee State University and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division II teams of Fairmont State University and Wheeling Jesuit. The next home game is against their rival Walsh University whom they lost to in playoffs last year.  The game is Tuesday Oct. 5 and starts at 7 p.m.
