Pot-infused soda should not have been legalized

Since marijuana has been legalized in the states of Washington and Colorado, people have enjoyed the opportunity to legally buy and smoke the substance. Many businesses have emerged in order to capitalize on the excitement by selling marijuana and marijuana-infused products. One company is hoping to sell a product people will drink every day.

According to an article posted on the New York Daily News website, a Washington company, Mirth Provisions, is selling a new line of sodas and coffees on Monday called “Legal.” The drink is meant to help you “take on the day with a smooth buzz and a grin a mile wide,” according to the drink’s creator, Adam Stites.

The drinks contain 20 milligrams of THC, the chemical found in marijuana that causes people to feel high. Stites, when asked about the dosage said, “The idea is we are going to put a reasonable dosage in here that you can kick back and casually drink the whole thing without worrying about how you are going to feel later.”

While the product will probably sell incredibly well, the idea is bad for a number of reasons. I understand these companies are trying to capitalize on the hype and excitement of a newly legalized drug. However, now it is starting to get out of hand. There are marijuana-based products popping up everywhere in those two states, including candy and chips.

Also, I am still not very comfortable with the idea of marijuana being legal. Although the drug does not have any severe long-term side effects like cocaine and heroin do, I still feel the drug can cause people to be dangerous and unable to do basic tasks.

For example, I would not trust someone who drank an entire cup of the marijuana infused coffee to drive to work immediately afterwards. They would be too high and confused to properly operate the vehicle. The same goes for people that work in extremely dangerous or important positions, such as construction workers, doctors and engineers. Also, imagine if children managed to find a way to drink that soda.

Overall, while I understand why Mirth Provisions is making these products, the products can be dangerous to people in today’s society and they (and other similar products) should have never been made nor legalized.
