The movie “Mean Girls” said it best: “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” A holiday once celebrated by children begging for candy has turned into a time for girls to parade around in skimpy clothes and call it a costume.Halloween has been defined by pop culture as a time to dress up in costumes, a day to be someone different. As young girls turn into young teenagers, some trade in their scary witch or sweet princess costumes for a sexy nurse or sultry temptress attire. No longer wanting to be scary and sweet, girls decide to push the envelope, if only for a day. No more long, pink, glitter, fairy dresses. Being over the age of 16 calls for costumes with shorter hems and less shimmer. More sexy colors like black and red and a low neckline is always nice. And who’s going to call these girls out on their ultra revealing Halloween costumes? Who decides how much skin is too much? Certainly not the girls who think they look “hot” and definitely not the boys who enjoy the view up her skirt.Some might wonder what exactly makes a Halloween costume slutty. I am happy to say there are no known guidelines on how to dress like a slut for Halloween. There are, however, certain costumes marketed with the intent to sell to those aiming to dress sexier. Some retailers like Walmart use clever adjectives to describe the sexier costumes. Walmart adds the word “sassy” to outfits titles, making simple Power Ranger and Alice and Wonderland costumes “Power Rangers Pink Ranger Sassy Deluxe” and “Alice in Wonderland Sassy Queen.”  Walmart also uses more subtle words like to “cutie” to highlight flashiness in a costume. For example “Candy Corn Cutie,” a Halloween candy favorite reduced to a short shirt, striped tights and an off-the-shoulder top, all for the price of $35. Whoever said dressing like a slut was cheap?A few more general examples of some costumes on the sexier side that have been showing up through the years are sexy police officer, belly dancer and sexy prison inmate. To refer back to the movie “Mean Girls,” some people just wear lingerie and a form of animal ears.Recently, celebrities have been the inspiration for risqué costumes. Don a teased black wig to a short party dress, and a girl can call herslef Snooki from Jersey Shore, or she can take the superstar route and dress up in one of Lady Gaga’s more revealing outfits. No matter if a girl is imitating someone or finally using something already in her closet, dressing a little naughty has been made easy to do and easy to get away with on Halloween.    How sexy is too sexy? It may be the difference in skirt length or the plunge of a neckline. Some girls use Halloween to highlight their bodies without being reprimanded. After all, almost no one is going to talk badly about a girl dressed in a sexy costume. Unless she does not normally dress like a slut, then it is not a costume. For the most part, a girl is free to be as sluttish as she wants to be.  In my opinion, the choice is solely up to the girl. If dressing super sexy for one night will not compromise a girl’s morals then she should go for it. If she wishes to keep the original spirit of Halloween alive by keeping childhood movie characters innocent and not “sassy” then more power to her. There is not right or wrong answer when choosing a costume. The choice is up to the girl wearing the costume.But what happens to the girls that still think Halloween is a day to dress up in scary or fun costumes? These girls dress up as objects, animals and people in the spirit of Halloween without baring a lot of skin. Some people still keep the idea of trick or treating and dressing up for Halloween sweet and innocent. It is possible to be attractive and have fun without dressing in a really sexy costume. What is the alternative to slutty costumes? Classy, cute and fun costumes. To be sweet or to be a slut; the choice may seem easy for some, but harder for others. No one has to be a saint on Halloween, but they also do not exactly have to be a sexy devil either. Surely girls covered up in silly costumes have just as much fun as scantily clad girls.
