Pucks, Passes and Pierogies

Over the past four years, I have seen a lot around this school.
With graduation looming and my level of concern hitting an all-time low right about now, I decided to write my column this week as a farewell to those who have read this column for the last year.
The past several months for Pittsburgh sports have been quite eventful. The first article I wrote this year was about the Penguins celebration and the city being on top of the world in terms of athletic capability.
However, since then, the Pittsburgh sports scene has been a roller coaster.
We have seen a Super Bowl defense result in a 9-7 season by the Steelers, which included a five-game losing-streak and a loss to the Cleveland Browns (a game which I chose to sit through, despite it being 10 degrees outside).
We then saw the dismissal of the Super Bowl MVP because he violated the substance abuse policy for the second time in his career.
We had a quarterback be accused of sexual assault- twice. Even though he was never charged with a crime, he became the first player suspended by the National Football League (NFL) under the league’s code of conduct policy to have ever committed a crime.
The Penguins’ season came off a year which saw the team win its first Stanley Cup in 17 years (consequently the same amount of time that the Pirates have finished under .500). The team finished in fourth place in the Eastern Conference and is currently in the second round of the playoffs, but struggled with injuries and poor play all season long.
It was, without a doubt, a bumpy road when it came to writing about teams losing every week. But, I did just that.
This semester also saw me write an article criticizing Point Park University Athletics, an article which received much criticism and a number of e-mails in my inbox.
Let me say this: I stand behind every word I said in that article. The support of Point Park athletics has been deplorable in my time here – maybe not by the limited amount of fans who actually attend, the parents who watch their kids play or the student media, but by the school itself. So go ahead and write another misspelled and nonsensical blog post about this too, readership.
But that is enough bashing and negative rhetoric about Point Park. I am probably not the hardest-working man at Point Park, so what do I know, right?
Writing this column has been a blast for me, and I hope I did not bore you with the same old, mundane sports opinions that you might read in other publications.
Since this is my last column, let me quickly address some things I never got to write about this semester:
Hines Ward should be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, no questions asked.
Sidney Crosby is better than Alexander Ovechkin because of his leadership and integrity.
Ben Roethlisberger was treated unfairly by the NFL by getting a suspension worse than many players who have actually committed crimes (he is going to miss more games than Michael Vick did once he was reinstated).
The Pirates will never win a World Series in my lifetime and may not ever make the playoffs in my lifetime, either. Seriously.
So there you go: my thoughts on some important sports issues, if you care.
But now, I am going to graduate Saturday, sit back, relax and grow a playoff beard. I am going to drink some beers, watch hockey, cheer for the Penguins and not think about Point Park for awhile.
However, one day, I know that I will be extremely thankful for the opportunity to share my thoughts about sports. There are not many jobs that let you talk so openly about what you think, so this was truly a great experience for me.
I know I gave you a hard time, Point Park, but thank you for the memories. While you made me want to pull my hair out most of the time, I made some great friends and recieved some great educational experiences here as well.
Finally, to those who read this, I say thanks. It was always cool to hear someone say in passing that he or she likes my column.
Finally, thank you Pittsburgh, for being the best city in the world.
 I am forever yours.
