Guest Column: Commuter survey results spur fund reconsideration

As you may know, over the past few semesters student government has been playing a larger role in solving major issues facing the students on this campus. Last semester, we focused our efforts on finding a solution to the problems with advising on this campus. Over the course of four months, the Senators and Executive Cabinet prepared a report analyzing the shortcomings associated with academic advising at Point Park University. In late April, United Student Government [USG] presented our findings to the university administration, and this coming October, the administration will be presenting a solution. This semester, we have set our sights on another major issue plaguing our school. Student government now hopes to find a way to help the commuter students on this campus who often are overlooked. Two weeks ago, USG created and released our commuter profile survey, designed to develop a better understanding of what a Point Park commuter truly looks like; their source of transportation, their willingness to attend on-campus events, and their overall concerns with the university are key to our ability to make progress on this issue.Last Monday, the Senators of USG chose to decrease funding to a program that commuters have used for more than half a decade. The bus pass subsidy is a program that helps both resident and commuter students by providing bus passes at a 25 percent discounted rate. On paper, the program is a fantastic idea. However, the returning numbers indicate that it is not currently achieving its objective. On average, this massive portion of the USG budget is only benefiting 300 students a month.  By this standard, roughly one out of every 10 students benefits from this massive project. Because we in USG strongly believe that the needs of students can be more effectively addressed, we are currently researching a transportation program that can benefit every student whose student activity pays into it.This is the real reason for our commuter survey. We want to find what works and what does not. We want to find out the best strategy to help not just a few members of this struggling segment of the student body, but all of them, once and for all.We understand that this process is not going to make many people happy. Changing a program that people have come to rely on is always dangerous, but the potential reward is well worth any skepticism. The transportation concerns of commuters have gone unaddressed for too long.
