Objectivity of traditional journalism is tainted

Tradeoffs between journalistic judgment to support the shrinking bottom line of news organizations in America have in some cases, tainted the objectivity of traditional journalism. A new generation of websites have emerged allowing individuals to filter their own news content without any negative pressures from advertisers, political bias’ or other intrusions on freedom of speech. One of these websites, Reddit, allows individuals to submit their own links then vote on the submitted links, which then renders the links front-page news, buried beneath other artless, or somewhere in-between. This voting process puts the power of deeming something “newsworthy” in the hands of the Reddit community.Individuals are now capable of receiving their daily quotient of news and features based on their own personalized interests. “Reddit doesn’t have an agenda, it doesn’t need to censor its stories or promote stories to make oodles and oodles of money” said Mark Meyers, a Reddit user and student at the University of Pittsburgh.According to The Journal of Media Economics,  “there are tradeoffs between journalistic judgment and the imperatives from the business side of a media organization because the current owners may allow profit to act as a gatekeeper in the news and selection process,” said Cindy Price a professor of Communication and Journalism at the University of Wyoming. As early as the 1970’s former Federal Communications Commissioner Nicholas Johnson suggested “that advertisers applied pressure to news program, to withhold information that might deprecate their products or undercut their corporate policies.” In a survey done by Peter Gade of the University of Oklahoma, 18 top editors and newsroom managers all agreed that, “there is an emphasis on maintaining or increasing profits.””People may have to watch more than one news program to get the objectivity that they desire or the definition of news itself may need to be changed,” said Price. The Internet thus allows for websites such as Reddit, to display multiple news stories from multiple news sources. This social news site allows users to pick and choose what news articles they want to see on the front page. “Launched in 2005, Reddit displays news based on what the community likes” according to crunch.com. This voting system allows for stories to jump to the front page based on the community’s interest in the post. If a story is receiving a substantial amount of attention through up-voting, it has a longer front-page life span. Typically, the top 25 posts stay on the front page for about a day. Similarly to Reddit there is Digg.com and Fark.com, both allow for a social news network.Reddit supplies the reader with multiple links to various news articles, photos and personal questions or stories. If you are interested in sports, politics or world news, there’s a sub-reddit for that.Reddit’s style of responsibly merging the one to one and one to group communication, along with its focus on diverse, quality content gives the site something TV, radio, and print media do not have. If Reddit grows and this type of media landscape becomes more common, people could become more accustomed to being able to interact and regulate their own news stories. The meaning of freedom of speech could change in the minds of Americans to include freedom from corporate regulation. Editors and producers control over news stories could be replaced with an audience’s instant up/down vote. Old, and sometimes cynical, ideas about what content the audience wants to see could also change all because of the audiences ability to have a direct say.A media company’s content selection process, which is influenced by political slant, advertising money, personal agendas, corporate interest, and what it thinks the public wants becomes extremely simple with direct audience input. The ability to comment on all stories allows for communication, argument and clarification. The voting system then stems off into the comments allowing for the most thought provoking or popular comments to reach the top. While some may believe this to simply be a popularity contest, in most cases these up-voted comments incorporate the most intellect and best advice. The opinion of the community is heard not only through the written word but also through the voting process. The news stories may not be able to change but the communication about them can.
