Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (SAIL) hosted its Student Org. Showcase on Monday afternoon in the Lawrence Hall Lobby.
The event formerly called Involvement Fair had 38 clubs and organizations represent according to SAIL. Students were able to learn more about the different clubs Point Park has to offer and sign up for ones they were interested in.
Many of the clubs in attendance had a large number of students to sign up including the rugby team, a sport that is not a part of the Athletics department. Captain Jakob Como said he is happy about the amount of people who signed up, including the number of female prospective athletes.
“This is the first year we have over 15 girl signatures to start up a female rugby team,” Como said on Monday. “We want to promote the sport of rugby to everybody on campus and having a girls rugby team would be very helpful.”
According to Como, the rugby club has been trying to start a women’s team for the last two years but never had enough signatures.
“To start a club you need at least 10 signatures and this is the first year we’ve had over that 10,” the senior multimedia major said.
Other clubs in attendance at the showcase included United Student Government (USG), Campus Activities Board (CAB), Strong Women Strong Girls, WPPJ, Her Campus, The Body and Black Student Union (BSU).
The showcase was mostly aimed toward first year students, but all were welcomed and encouraged to join an organization.
Black Student Union president Christian Moore, a senior Business Management major said that the club plans to expand this year and host more events for the student body.
“Traditionally, we have our Open Mic Nights. This year, we plan to have freshman hangouts, Guys night out and Girls night out and a couple of game nights,” Moore said.
Black Student Union is a club that was defunct and was recently brought back has significantly increased the amount of members since last year, according to Moore.
“I’m excited to see a lot of new faces, it’s really good for Point Park that we keep growing as an organization and that more students should want to become involved on campus,” Moore said.
Her Campus, an online student-run magazine, had nearly 40 students sign up for the club. Although the organization is targeted towards female college students guys can also join the club.
“Girls and guys can join, we actually have a few guy staff writers on our staff right now,” Rebekah Mohrmann, graphic designer and co-social media manager said.
If students were not able to attend the Student Org. Showcase, they can still become involved with an organization of their own interest by contacting the main student leader. You can find their contact email on Org Sync.
You can also start your own club of your own interest by contacting the SAIL Office on the first floor of the Student Center.
“It is important to be involved at Point Park because it gives you the ability to make connections, friends, and make memories in outside of the classroom,” Como said.
