The men’s soccer team faced off against Houghton College last week in a matchup of former American Mideast Conference (AMC) members. Point Park and Houghton were two of the schools that left the conference this past summer when it fell apart. Point Park moved on to the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC), and Houghton transitioned into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III.The former AMC schools are spread out to all areas on the east coast. Walsh University used to be a top contender is most sports in the AMC, specifically its soccer teams. Walsh is now in a three-year provisional period to enter the NCAA as a Division II school. Roberts Wesleyan College and Daemen College are both in the same group as Walsh, as they are currently transitioning into the Division II level of the NCAA.Fisher College, located in Boston, forced many teams such as Point Park to travel long distances to play these conference matches. Fisher is still in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) with Point Park, but is classified as an independent institution. Wilberforce University is in the same situation as they are part of the Association of Independent Institutions with Fisher College.Carlow University continued its path with Point Park as they also joined the KIAC. Overall, the former AMC teams clearly have different paths for the future. Some are trying to move up as high as possible in divisions to compete with the best teams in the nation. Others are without a conference entirely. Finally, Point Park is now in a Kentucky conference. The Point Park athletic teams have dominated in the KIAC so far this year. The women’s and men’s soccer teams are both undefeated in the conference with the regular season coming to a near end. The women’s volleyball team stands at 4-1 in the conference. It is much too difficult to predict where the KIAC and Point Park will both be in a few years. However, it would not be too much of an exaggeration to say that the KIAC is less competitive in some areas, specifically soccer. On the other hand, women’s volleyball is dangerously competitive with Indiana University East undefeated in the conference and ranked No. 18 in the NAIA.Hopefully the KIAC will continue to grow outside of the state of Kentucky. Point Park clearly does not need its conference to disband again, and the KIAC could end up being a powerful conference with members in many different areas.
