A fire started but was quickly contained Monday morning on the fifth floor of the Student Center, according to Campus Police. The fire started when a Sterno candle ignited fire inside a stainless steel warmer used by food service for catering. A fire extinguisher was used to immediately put the fire out, according to Campus Police Captain Bernie Merrick. There were no injuries or property damage.“It was nothing really major,” said Merrick during a Monday phone interview.Around 60 to 100 people emptied from the building around 10:30 a.m., according to Merrick.“They all evacuated safely down the stairs, and we had some people we evacuated using the elevator because of mobility concerns,” Merrick said.Merrick said smoke had to be exhausted from the fifth floor. The heating and air conditioning systems were put into a vent system to push smoke outside the building.“Once the smoke was exhausted from the building, we let everybody back in and they continued their functions,” Merrick said. The City Fire Department’s Engine Company 4 also responded to the fire, according to Merrick.
