In retrospect, Point Park University’s sophomore guard April Austin has no regrets about what her team accomplished in the 2010-11 season. In fact, she’s proud.Despite the team falling short of the postseason for the second year in a row, the women’s basketball team made history. They were first to record consecutive winning seasons since the 1985-86 campaign.”I think we had a successful year despite what people may think,” said Austin, who was named to the All-American Mideast Conference (AMC) second team this season. “We were able to do something that no other program could and to me, that sets us up for good things to come down the road.”Their accomplishment came under the tutelage of head coach Sam Kosanovich, who will step down after this year to take on his role as the director of the University’s Student Center full-time.”I enjoyed coaching the women’s basketball team for five years,” Kosanovich said. “With the direction that the athletic department is going, there needed to be a full-time director of the student center and a full-time women’s basketball coach. It was more financially beneficial for me to decide to direct the student center…. I thank the University for that choice.”A native of the Munhall community, Kosanovich has over 20 years of coaching experience as an assistant and head coach on the high school and college levels. He took over the program in the 2006-07 season. After going 12-16, they came out the next year and suffered a 2-25 campaign. But after a rebuilding stint in 2008-09, Kosanovich was able to bring them to a 10-9 record in the AMC and within one game of clinching a post season berth.”To be honest, I’m a little bit sad,” Kosanovich said. “We made some good strides. We were right on our way to building a solid program. Also, you become a family when you’re a basketball team. I got to know them and they got to know me. But I understand what is happening and I am grateful for the time I had with them.”This year, the team had a red hot December. They won six straight in their non-conference schedule. But the New Year hit and so did their struggles. The team saw three nationally-ranked conference opponents in a nine game span and over two weeks in January, suffered a four game losing streak. They pulled out a 74-36 victory on senior day against inner-city foe, Carlow University and added a 57-48 win at Houghton College. They dropped their season finale at home against then-No. 10 Daemen College, 69-54.”It was frustrating,” said senior guard Ashley Henderson. “I know the potential that we had. But it was hard for us to get on the same page and pull some things together in order to win key games.”Henderson’s third-best 17.3 points per game average in the AMC was good enough for to be a first-team All-conference selection. A former all-state player at nearby Greensburg Central Catholic, she finished eighth in Point Park’s history with 1,209 career points. She was only one of four Pioneers players to score at least 1,000 points, pull down 400 rebounds and record 200 assists in a career. “It was a nice accomplishment,” she added. “But I would have rather won more game and gone further with the season.”As for a replacement for Kosanovich, the University’s athletic director, Dan Swalga is hard at work to find one.”As of now we have gotten around 145 applications from all regions of the country,” Swalga said. “We wanted to try to make this position one that would include applicants from all over. Once you put the opening in one publication, it goes all over the country.”The committee to finding a new head women’s basketball coach is set. According to Swalga, it consists of a faculty member, two athletic administrators, two student-athletes and one other current Point Park coach. The identity of those individuals, right now, is being withheld by the department.
