“It is reviewed by the curriculum committee and either approved, perhaps with some changes, or tabled to be discussed at a later time,” he said. “It can also be voted down and must be resubmitted. Once a proposal passes the curriculum committee, it is sent to the faculty assembly for discussion by the entire faculty.”
If this proposal passes the next step through the faculty assembly, the provost will then be notified by the dean that the proposal “with all appropriate amendments” was approved.
Although this process seems quite lengthy to the committees, in the long run some students think it could be very healthy for the academic atmosphere at Point Park.
“I feel there are many students that could benefit from this potential new major. I know students from other schools that would transfer for this major,” Frantz said. “They want to work specifically with animation but cannot [do so] where they’re currently at.”
A major like this will expand the arena of the cinema and digital arts program, as filmmaking can be seen at a greater length. Nelson mentioned in Monday’s meeting that a tentative date of fall 2011 would be appropriate for the release of this new major.
Students and professors, including Rice, admit that some courses in the area of animation would be interesting to take.
“I believe over time many new students would flock to Point Park for the degree in digital arts,” Frantz said. “I can definitely see people signing up for it.”
