The Point Park volleyball team got back on track just in time for the end of the season.
The Pioneers won their last two matches, both away games, to end their regular season with a 15-22 overall record and a 9-3 record in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC).
Junior Emily Meng said the team’s wins brought their spirits up.
“We just had lots of fun, played with some edge and played the entire game,” Meng said.
Point Park battled fellow KIAC team Alice Lloyd College On Nov. 6. The Pioneers dominated each set with scores of 25-7, 25-7 and 25-7 to take a 3-0 win over the Eagles. Three of Point Park’s players reached double-digits in kills. Megan Branchick had the teamhigh of 12; Nikki Inquartano added 11 and Shiloh Simonson helped with 10 kills.
Setter Madison Weldon racked up eight aces for the team-high, and produced a total of 23 assists. Inquartano and Simonson helped by bringing in four and three aces respectively.
“Alice Lloyd was a very big confidence booster on the road,” outside hitter Isabella Vavrek said.
Against Asbury University, the Pioneers achieved their greatest on-theroad win and was the final regular-season match for both teams. Point Park won 3-1 with scores of 25-17, 25-14, 24-26, 25-15. This placed Point Park third in the KIAC.
Meng attributes the win to the energy she exuded during the match and each of her teammates uniting their individual talents.
“It was everyone, Nikki being a wall in the front row, Megan crushing the ball in all 6 rotations, Shiloh and [Isabella] giving it their all, Paige being vocal, Madison keeping a steady head and calming everyone down,” Meng said. “Everyone was doing their jobs, and we just flowed.”
Branchick obtained her season-high of 22 kills against Asbury. With help from Inquartano and Cristiane Chaves who recorded six kills each, the Pioneers had a team total of 45 kills. On defense, libero Paige Baker, snagged 22 digs, while Weldon and Meng had 23 and 12 assists, respectively.
Vavrek, one of the three seniors on the team, said the win against Asbury was the happiest she’s been all season since their victory over Keiser.
“We came in and really killed that match,” Vavrek said. “I was so proud of my team for working together and putting forth their best effort.”
Next for the Point Park volleyball team is the KIAC Tournament at Rio Grande University. The Pioneers will play their first match against the sixth team in the conference, which has yet to be determined.
Meng said the team is working hard to prepare for the tournament, which will be held on Nov. 13-14.
“We have been working on our weaknesses, we have been training hard and putting in the work,” Meng said.
Vavrek agreed with her teammate. She said the Pioneers have been in the gym every day doing drills.
“All of us are so excited for this upcoming weekend.” Vavrek added about the team’s approaching tournament.
