The Point Park University women’s volleyball team showed their drive to make it far this season during “Volley for Vision” this past Saturday against West Liberty University and Urbana University. They destroyed both teams in three sets each. They recently returned from the Clearwater Christian Invitational Tournament in Florida where they were able to finish with a 4-1 record and two consecutive wins. This gave them momentum after a hard loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene University before their trip to Florida. The Pioneers showed great intensity Saturday afternoon, dominating the competition at Grenntree Sportsplex. The Pioneers rolled through West Liberty with the leadership of Ashley Zietak with 13 kills, Lindsey Oberacker with 11 and Rachel Roddy with 10. Katie Geary had 37 of the 42 assists for the Pioneers. Zietak did the same thing for the Pioneers against Urbana with 13 kills followed by Roddy with 10 kills. Geary was a major contributor again with 28 assists in the match out of the 32 total for the Pioneers. Now sporting a 28-3 overall record and a 2-2 in conference record, the Pioneers and rank fifth in the American Mideast Conference (AMC) standings. They are two conference wins behind the Malone University Pioneers, who are in fourth place in the conference. This will make for a very interesting matchup tonight when Point Park’s Pioneers take on Malone’s Pioneers at Malone. Point Park looks to keep the streak rolling and win the battle of the Pioneers. The team focuses on success. Even when they were beating Urbana by a wide margin in the third set, they continued to fearlessly dive on the floor, proving that they are driven and determined. The team really rallies behind Roddy’s leadership. With her as captain of this team, they are poised to do damage down the stretch. The Pioneers rank 11th in Division I in total assists with 1267, thanks to Geary this season. They also rank eleventh in total kills with 1376. Down the stretch, the Pioneers have five more conference games, including the Malone match today, then Daemon College on Saturday at Greentree SportsPlex. The teams ranked second through seventh make the playoffs, so if the Pioneers stay where they are they will make it. Go support your lady Pioneers this weekend at Greentree Sportsplex. Your time is up in the penalty box, you can head back out on the ice.
