The Student Center basement, recently renovated into the Professional Career Readiness Center (PCRC), flooded the morning of Sunday, Jan. 26, from a leak.
A coupling failed on the main sprinkler lines of the Student Center, filling the building’s basement with roughly three inches of water.
The leak was repaired and clean up is well underway, according to Lou Corsaro, assistant vice president of public relations.
The leak caused quite a stir in the operations of the PCRC. This came alongside concerns from students who regularly use the center for events.
According to Dean Jolin, the director of career readiness, “The unforeseen water issue is unfortunate, but the PCRC team is able to pivot and continue all services for our students and alumni.”
“The Conferences & Events department is quickly working on finding new spaces for anyone who had meetings or events scheduled to
ensure that there is an alternative option for these groups to meet as well,” Jolin said.
He emphasized that all meetings or events that were scheduled this week in any of the spaces located on the lower level have been moved to separate locations. These organizations include the Gender & Sexuality Spectrum Alliance’s (GSSA) weekly meeting
that takes place in the Training Room.
It’s crucial for the GSSA to have a dry, sustainable location, as the organization is hosting a Trans Clothing Exchange on Jan. 29.
Additionally, the Student Government Association holds its weekly meetings in the multipurpose room located in the Professional
Career Readiness Center. SGA has not released a statement on where its meetings will be temporarily until the center is repaired.
A Physical Plant representative did not respond in time for comment.
As Point Park continues to face facility changes and challenges, Jolin said he wants the students and faculty to be patient.
“I think that it is important to maintain a positive mindset, even in the face of unfortunate challenges like these, to make the most of a situation and seek the best way forward.” Jolin said.
