It’s two days until Valentine’s Day and if you haven’t made plans yet, that’s okay. You don’t need to have an over-the-top plan to celebrate.
Sometimes, it’s OK to spend the day with your partner doing nothing at all. And even if you don’t have a partner, you can still celebrate on your own or with friends.
All we ask at The Globe is that you love each other and yourself. Have we beat this bush multiple times? Yes, we have. But it’s OK now because it’s Valentine’s Week and there’s no reason you shouldn’t want to treat yourself this holiday.
Now is the time to get together with friends and celebrate. Galentine’s isn’t just for the girls. Well, although it’s in the title there shouldn’t be a reason as to why any group of friends can’t celebrate this holiday of love together. Whether your love is platonic or intimate you all deserve to delve into the consumerist nature of every national holiday.
As a staff, we have confirmed that the decorations at Walmart, Target and likely other stores, have been set out since the end of December.
Are you hesitating to spoil yourself or spend money on something you’ve wanted for a while? Do it. Now is the time. Valentine’s Day is essentially a second Christmas. There’s a reason that every chain store you go to is filled with candy. Whether you share a box of Reese’s Peanut Butter Hearts with your partner or friend or eat the entire box by yourself, we’re not going to judge.
Do you want to spend the day eating chocolates and binge-watching a series on Netflix? Once again, do it. Who cares what other people think? Netflix has enough shows that you can spend the whole day watching if you want – by yourself or with people, it’s all valid to us.
So what are you doing? In addition to candy, go out and buy some decor, but in moderation, to not feed into over-consumerism.
As for couples, do whatever you want to do as long as it’s legal. The Globe editorial staff does not condone doing illegal activities.
Take your partner to the movie theater to see the film you’ve both been dying to see, or even go to a bowling alley if it’s open. If you need a bowling alley nearby to attend, the closest place you can go to is the Arsenal Bowling Alley in Lawrenceville. Old-time fun like this can be great for Valentine’s week whether you’re rolling solo or in a duo.
Who else deserves love on Valentine’s Day? The people working at the places you’re visiting with your lover, your friends or solo. These people likely can’t wait to get home to see their partner or their friends yet despite that, they still treat the people they serve with respect – give them the same treatment.
The love shouldn’t end there – appreciate your classmates, appreciate your professors and appreciate the people who you get to see every day on campus and beyond. But even when it’s not Valentine’s day, the people around you still deserve respect.
Lastly, we want to take this time to express our love to everyone who reads our paper whether in print or online. Our Valentine’s gift to you all is to continue being the best source for campus news and the happenings Downtown along with our friends at U-View.
If anything, in the midst of the middle semester work, take this Friday off to let yourself have fun, and dive into some self-love, just for this day.
