Every month of the year has a list of holidays that can be considered “obscure” or silly. April is no exception to this, with multiple days of the month having their own random holiday.
If you’re looking for something to do besides studying for finals, maybe consider celebrating some of these holidays as a joke or for real. Celebrating all or most of these can be a good idea if you’re looking for a challenge.
This idea came from an episode of Late Night S’News, Point Park’s comedy show on U-View, about obscure January holidays. Make sure to watch that episode on YouTube.
We all know April Fool’s Day is on April 1. Sure, you can celebrate that by pranking a friend or family member, as long as it isn’t harmful. However, this holiday isn’t obscure.
April 2, the first Wednesday of the month, is National Walking Day. Walking that day is a great way to get some exercise in if you’ve been inside since January.
On April 3, you can celebrate two holidays at once. Don’t Go To Work Unless it’s Fun Day is pretty wordy, but self-explanatory. I wouldn’t condone this though, as you’ll most likely get fired or written up. Tread lightly with that one.
The second one is National Burrito Day. This one is easy enough. Pop on over to Chipotle or Moe’s for a burrito and you’ve celebrated the holiday.
April 4 also has World Rat Day, which celebrates pet rats. If you have a pet rat, make sure to give it extra treats that day.
Perhaps the holiday that I can get behind the most is World Health Day on April 7. World Health Day is sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO). The holiday serves to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the UN’s World Health Organization on April 7, 1948.
April 8 has multiple holidays, but the two I want to mention are All is Ours Day and National Library Workers Day. All is Ours Day encourages us to reach our goals. Celebrate this by asking someone for help to reach a goal. It’s that simple.
For National Library Workers Day, be sure to thank the employees in the University Center, as they put a lot of work into giving students resources to utilize for free.
National Pet Day is on April 11. Everyone loves their pets, I would hope. So be sure to also give them extra treats that day too, as well as more attention. If you have a pet rat, this’ll be the second time they get celebrated in one month.
April 16 is World Save the Elephant Day and Stress Awareness Day. Celebrate Save the Elephant Day by donating to a charity that aims to save elephants. You can even watch a documentary about elephants if you can’t donate.
Stress Awareness Day is another day of the month that gives you an opportunity to relax and unwind. Do this however you normally do.
Celebrating any of these holidays can give you something to do in April. The other half of April and the obscure holidays included in it will be covered in the next issue of The Globe.
