Men’s basketball assistant coach John Coakley announced his departure from Point Park on Monday via an Instagram post.
Coakley publicly expressed his gratitude for the staff, players and opportunities at Point Park and in Pittsburgh.
“Unfortunately, my time here at Point Park has come to an end,” Coakley said. “The relationships I’ve built in the city of Pittsburgh over the past three seasons are something I’ll never, ever forget.”
Head coach Kevin Reynolds hired Coakley to the Point Park men’s basketball coaching staff in April 2022. Coakley concluded his third season at Point Park weeks ago after a postseason loss in the Mountain East Conference tournament on
March 5.
Coakley also worked in the Office of Student Life as an Administrator on Duty.
“Thank you to all the beautiful humans I had the pleasure of being around every day,” Coakley said. “Each of you accepted me into your lives gracefully and with unwavering love.”
Coakley helped lead the Pioneers to a combined 65-29 record over three seasons, guiding the team to two NAIA River States Conference titles and a spot in the MEC tournament quarter-finals.
Coakley played an essential role in the men’s basketball program’s transition to NCAA Division II athletics in the 2024-25 season. The team ended with a 11-19 record overall and went 4-16 in the MEC.
Reynolds and Coakley worked together on the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi men’s basketball staff, an NCAA Division I program in the Southland Conference. Coakley served as a graduate assistant.
Coakley most recently worked as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Huston-Tillotson, for one season. Huston-Tillotson is an NAIA institution in the Red River Athletic Conference.
After obtaining his undergraduate degree in kinesiology from Huston-Tillotson in 2019, Coakley went on to earn a graduate degree in kinesiology from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 2021.
Major changes are on the horizon for the Point Park men’s basketball program this offseason, as head coach Kevin Reynolds is no longer listed as the head coach on Point Park’s website. Multiple sources stated that Reynolds completed his final year with the Pioneers this year.
In addition, numerous players entered the transfer portal per Instagram posts and The Portal Report. Center Nazareth Fisher and guard Brendan Williams announced their decision to enter the portal last week.
