A 19-year-old man was taken to Mercy Hospital after he walked up to the Pittsburgh Police Downtown safety center saying he was shot at the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Smithfield Street around 11 p.m. Sunday.
The unidentified victim walked up to the police substation and said he was shot in the chest. The shooter was described as wearing all black clothes and black shoes with white soles and was last seen on Strawberry Way near William Penn Place.
Evidence was found across the street from the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Officers on the scene said they found a shoe, a cell phone and a trail of blood going down Forbes Avenue towards the bus stop outside the Tower at PNC Plaza.
Nearly an hour after the victim talked to police, a PointALERT was sent out at 11:56 p.m. Sunday to those in the university community who signed up for the service. A later alert sent at 5:21 a.m. Monday said the shooting was an isolated incident.
According to Point Park Police Chief Jeffrey Besong, Pittsburgh Police asked the university for footage from the Playhouse at the time of the shooting. Additionally, Port Authority police checked all Downtown T stations and did not find anybody matching the description of the shooter.
Pittsburgh police dispatchers mentioned multiple people involved in the incident and detained a minor, but he was released and not arrested. Someone who may have been involved was seen on city cameras running into the Oliver Garage.
Additionally, a hoodie as well as a ski mask were found at the top floor of the garage.
No arrests have been made. A bullet shell casing was found outside on Smithfield Street outside the former Frank and Seder building around 11:40 a.m. Monday.
Two incidents of trespassing also occurred on campus property on Wednesday, April 9.
Both people were trying to stay warm, Besong said. They received verbal warnings.
