This review contains spoilers for the musical “Legally Blonde.”
Starting on Wednesday April 9 and ending on Sunday April 13, “Legally Blonde” took the stage at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. “Legally Blonde” is a musical that follows Elle Woods as she goes to Havard Law to win back the guy she loves. However, Harvard is a lot harder than she thought it would be, and many of her peers look down on her. Throughout the story, she works hard to prove them all wrong.
For someone like myself that has never seen this show or movie, it was absolutely incredible. The show itself has so many hilarious moments. An example of this is the song “There, Right There!” This particular song debates if a character is gay because, if he is, it would prove he perjured himself. Every element of the song was amusing.
While the show is funny, it also has serious aspects to it too. An example of this is when Woods’ professor, Callahan, kisses her. He then reveals that Woods only got an internship with him because of her looks, which is upsetting because she put in a lot of work to get the internship.
Woods is rightfully upset and is about to drop out and return home, but she decides to stay after some convincing. Then Woods goes and wins the case and proves she is more than just a pretty face. These examples are just some of the scenes that make this show complex and entertaining.
Also, the cast and crew of this performance did a spectacular job. The show started off strong with the song “Omigod You Guys.” This song was captivating and drew me into the show immediately. The vocals were also incredible, giving me literal chills. It wasn’t the only song that gave me chills either.
Additionally, the choreography was captivating to watch. For example, the song “Whipped Into Shape” had an added element of jump rope props, and everyone on stage jumped in sync with the dance. The choreography was simply incredible to watch across the entire show.
Another remarkable part of the show is how professional mishaps on stage were handled. For example, in one of the songs Woods’ dress became untied in the middle of a musical number. It wasn’t too noticeable because the actress playing Woods just kept one hand on the dress and carried on with the choreography before she got the chance to get help from a fellow cast member on stage.
This likely wasn’t the only mishap that happened, but it was the only major one that I noticed.
Another fun part about this show was the dogs they had on stage. It was impressive how well trained they were. The dogs were simply so adorable and had the audience swooning every time they made an appearance.
Overall, this cast and crew did a splendid job with this show.
