The Student Government Association (SGA) swore in its fall 2025 President Christian Rangel and Vice President Madigan Balfe at its final weekly Monday meeting by cracking jokes and sharing their farewells.
As her first order of business, Balfe, who won with 50 votes, swore in five senator-elects who were in attendance, including former SGA Vice President Dillion Peterson. Peterson caused the room to erupt into laughter when he switched from the podium into a seat next to other senators.
Sienna Wraith lost the vice presidential ticket by 16 votes, and there was one write-in for Brian Cashman.
Elliott Geary lost the presidential ticket by a difference of two votes, whereas Riley Mahon gained only 10 ballots in the presidential race.
New senators, in order of most to least votes, were Nevaeh Cary, Peyton Martin, Dillion Peterson, Christian Reid, Maggie Roberts, Zoe Cybulski, Cassie Manges and Zarrick Plizga.
Then, Balfe suggested moving the government body’s communication platform off Discord, which they used for the past year, and onto Microsoft Teams or Slack.
Chief of Staff Katherine Greissinger and Senator Mahon said they were in favor of continuing to use Discord. Peterson said he was in favor of using Microsoft Teams.
Wraith agreed that a change needed to be made in SGA’s communication platform because she rarely checks Discord’s notifications. Rangel said that he was entirely opposed to using any form of the Microsoft suite.
A unanimous decision was not reached during the meeting as to what communication platform SGA will use moving forward.
Cabinet members made their reports, many of which didn’t have anything other than closing or farewell remarks aside from Graphic Design Coordinator Bee Pugh.
“Unfortunately, the grind never stops,” Pugh said. “We have a lot of graphics.”
Pugh said that they are in the process of creating a hiring graphic for the upcoming year and that they intend to complete an end of the year graphic explaining everything that SGA accomplished in addition to survey graphics for the innovation committee.
Former President Kyle MacLaughlin gave his final report to senators about the successes of Pioneer Community Day that happened on April 8. SGA raised $200 for the Palestine children’s relief fund by selling coffee and boba drinks.
In addition, MacLaughlin said that he plans to send out letters that were written to prisoners, care packages and other things that were made at the event later this week. This upcoming Wednesday he has his final meeting with University President Chris Brussalis and will bring the new executive presidents with him if they are available.
He added that he plans to ensure that $2000 will be set aside for standing heaters to be placed in Village Park and the lot behind the Student Center beginning this summer.
