The United Student Government (USG) is looking for ways to improve how information is shared between itself and University organizations. USG Treasurer Andrew LeDonne and Michael Gieseke, the senior assistant dean of campus life, said that students are blaming USG and Student Activities for not knowing what is going on between USG and Point Park clubs and organizations.“USG and Student Activities sort of share this responsibility,” said Gieseke Monday afternoon at the USG meeting in the Student Center. “Who’s responsible for organizations? Who’s responsible for knowing? Who’s responsible for keeping lists? Organizations play by their own rules and they currently are not doing anything wrong by doing that.”One of the problems that USG faces is the lack of an official list of all the school organizations’ leaders. Because USG does not know who the presidents or treasurers of these organizations are, groups can be left out in the cold.“[Organizations] complain that we don’t get in contact with them, that’s the main thing,” said LeDonne at the USG meeting. “If I don’t have someone’s name and I email [everyone else] about funding, then they’re left out. It’s [about] trying to get everybody involved.”The leadership for University clubs and organizations changes between semesters and years. These changes usually happen towards the end of the term and the names of new leadership for these organizations are not given to USG. This leaves USG without the knowledge of who will be in charge and therefore who to contact when it comes time to discuss budgets and other issues. “Whenever we have to go contact the clubs in the fall semester, it’s hard to find out who’s in charge,” LeDonne said. “That’s one thing we’re trying to address.”Gieseke suggested putting stipulations on organizations in order to give them deadlines to get necessary information to USG.“That gives everyone a little more ability to understand, share information, put out what’s going on,” Gieseke said. “Otherwise we will continue to have groups miss out on things and continue to have miscommunication about what’s going on.”Gieseke commented that he knows USG would like to allow organizations to do what they want, but he implied that it could be costly for USG to permit that to happen.LeDonne sees it as a two-part problem. USG does not have the information it needs from organizations, and it cannot get important information out to the correct places. University organizations are not receiving the information they need because they rely on USG for it, but USG does not know where to send that information.USG will look into finding a solution to the problem.“We want to make everything easier on everybody,” LeDonne said.
