Clubs collaborate to host ‘Quidditch Tournament’

From broomsticks to golden snitches, on Apr. 12, the Student Center Gymnasium will transform into a scene from the “Harry Potter” book and movie series with a Quidditch Tournament sporting event.

The Campus Activities Board (CAB), the Sports, Arts and Entertainment Management (SAEM) club and the Intramural sports program have teamed up to host a Quidditch tournament from 9-11 p.m. The sport is well known from “Harry Potter” and the event will have similar ideas and rules to the books.

“There is actually a person who is the golden snitch,” CAB public relations coordinator and sophomore advertising and public relations major Nicole Miller said in a phone interview Mar. 18. “[The team] that catches the golden snitch is the team that wins.”

Upon entering the gym, the SAEM club will have an iPad with a quiz to sort students into one of the four houses, just like the sorting hat does in the “Harry Potter” books. Students will be identified as Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff.

“It is definitely going to be very ‘Harry Potter’ themed,” Miller said. “It is also going to just be a great time for students to play a game and hang out with their friends.”

The clubs have planned to include themed foods from the book and movie series, such as chocolate frogs and butterbeer. CAB’s special events coordinator and sophomore global cultural studies major Justina Cincotti said that the knitting club is working to make creations that will be raffled at the end of the event.

“The knitting club is going to be knitting us four scarves,” Cincotti said in a phone interview Mar. 18. “There will be a scarf for each house.”

Cincotti said that part of the idea came from the idea that other, larger universities have Quidditch clubs, and that a lot students love “Harry Potter.” The special events committee is also trying to bring more physically active events to campus for students.

“We’re trying to do a lot more physical activity sort of events this semester for the special events committee,” Cincotti said.

Felicia Wohlgemuth, a member of CAB and advertising and public relations major at Point Park, said a lot of what is planned is still a surprise for students.

“I’m excited to see how they are going to set it up and how it is going to play out,” Wohlgemuth said in an interview Thursday in the Lawrence Hall 2nd floor lounge. “In the movies it is obviously big, but I wonder how [CAB] will be able to portray that part in a gymnasium.”

The game is set to play at different times throughout the evening and Miller said that all supplies will be provided for the participants.

Miller explained that she is most excited to see how students portray the sport of Quidditch.

“I feel like probably no one has played,” Miller said. “It is going to be funny to watch a different array of people playing, having fun.”

Cincotti said students do not need to worry about planning their own teams before coming to the event.

“You can come anytime with your friends or by yourself and you can join a team and play the game,” Cincotti said. “It will be a fun, competitive but laid back atmosphere.”
