One new face on Point Park’s women’s golf team has been playing since the age of three. This fact showed during her initial match, where she placed first on the team and sixth place individually.
Alena Lancia came to Point Park on a scholarship and has worked her way into the lineup to start her freshman year.
“She is a dedicated golfer with a good game. I expect big things out of her the next three years,” golf Coach Gabe Bubon said.
Bubon said he wanted to recruit international students, but recruits like Lancia, who is from Hermitage, PA, have increased his faith in the team this year. The team is already off to a positive start this season, placing third at their first invitational, and second at their second match.
In high school, Lancia was first on an all-region team. She played for three years on an all-star district team, went to state qualifiers her junior year and was team captain her senior year.
Lancia practices every day. Her strength includes her drive, with an average length of 230 yards. “At my house, we have a putting green and a flag, and I chip and putt to that three hours a day.” Lancia said. “It’s what I focus most of my attention to.”
She has a few things that she would like to improve upon. “I would like to improve my [drive] because I am so small. If I gain more distance off of my t-ball, it can help my game a lot,” the 5’2” golfer said.
Although golf is her first love, Lancia does not wish to pursue a career in the sport. “Being a bio science major, I want to get my master’s degree in biochemistry. That is my main focus.” Lancia said.
Lancia said she looks up to Coach Bubon. “I look at him as that friend who will tell you when you’re messing up. He’s a tough love type of guy.” Lancia said. Lancia has also become close with some of the upperclassmen members of the team.
“We’re excited to have Alena on the team this year. She’s a good player, and I know that we will use her scores,” senior member Caroline Collins said.
“Her strongest area is the fact that she wants to do well; her attitude,” senior Chloe Callison said. Lancia looks to them for pointers. “Coach left it up to us to take her under our wing.” Callison said.
Lancia is nervous for the season this year. “She has a good short game. If she consistently keeps the ball in the fairway, she will be good,” Bubon said.
The senior members of the team have confidence in Lancia. “As a freshman it is easy to get nervous, so as long as she stays calm, she will be successful on the course.” Collins said. In spite of being nervous, Lancia is ready to take on the season.
“This is our year,” she said.
