What do skating, biking, filming and photography all have in common? They are all an integral part of the up-and-coming Action Sports Club at Point Park University.Nathan Osche, the founder of the club, established it with the goal of providing a place for people of all majors and interests to come together to hang out and pursue their interests.”Don’t hesitate, whether you do an action sport or not, have an open mind. Nothing you do with the club will be a disappointment,” said Osche, a sophomore cinema major during the Sept. 29 meeting on the seventh floor of the Student and Convocation Center. The Action Sports Club serves as a creative outlet for many types of people, not just skaters and photographers. An action sport, such as skating, longboarding, riding BMX bikes, roller-blading or even riding a scooter fits this club. However, it is also a place for photographers and film makers to explore their creativity, and writers and graphic designers can work on the magazine. A clothing line is also in the works as well. “One of our biggest goals this year is to use what we do at the skate parks to further our creative works. We’re going to have the photographers in the group take pictures of us doing our thing at the skate parks. And then we’re going to try to release a magazine that shows off those pictures,” said Michael Potoczny, senior history major and a student contact for the club. “We’re also going to try to release a clothing line that will act as our fundraiser for the club and its events.”The club is still rather small at the moment, with about seven students attending the meeting, but they spread the word in as many ways as possible, from word of mouth, to Facebook, to literally asking random students walking through campus to join the group in a van and go with them.”I had just gotten off the shuttle and [Potoczny] came up to me and asked if I could work a camera. I said ‘yes’ and he told me to get in the van. It was as simple as that and now I’m part of a group that I love,” said Kaleigh Fitzgerald, a sophomore double major in cinema digital arts and screenwriting and one of the photographers in the group, said during the meeting. There is talk by Potoczny of eventually setting the club up as a series of smaller groups, such as a longboarding group, a biking group and so on. The club as a whole will still go out and participate in activities together, but the sub-groups would have activities geared toward particular interests. However, the group members are unsure of when, of even if, this idea will be implemented. Those interested in joining can email [email protected] or join their Facebook group. Meetings are not on a specific day, rather, students should look to the Facebook page.
