Berie is a senior photography major and is the sports photo editor for The Globe.
– Why did you join The Globe?
As a photography major, I love to photograph all aspects of photography. Since I love to build onto my resume, being a photo editor makes me stand out a little more than others.
– How did you hear about The Globe?
I first heard about The Globe a couple of years ago during one of my photography classes when a student came in and talked about it.
– Why did you choose Point Park?
When I was in high school, I was very much involved with my school’s newspaper. It just so happened that I photographed Chinese acrobats that were at my school and they were even entered into the high school media day. Out of 9 school districts, I got first place. Winning that award made me choose photography and Point Park.
– Explain your role this year on the Globe staff.
As the sports photo editor, I’m required to look through photos from different sporting events, edit them for the print and sometimes write cutlines for each photo that goes into the paper. Also as a photo editor, I’m required to send out the staff photographers email for unclaimed pitches, write on the featured blog and also take the staff profile photos sometimes.
– Why do you like photography?
I love being a photographer because it’s so much fun. Whenever I’m photographing something, it hardly ever feels like I’m working since I’m getting paid to do my favorite hobby. Capturing those special moments and later on printing them out and passing them out to people makes me feel like I’m where I belong.
– What does it mean to you to be a photographer?
To me, being a photographer is telling people’s stories and capturing those special moments. I live for shots that are timeless and photography is the best way to show it off.
– Why do you like sports photography?
The one thing that I love about sports photography is that there are so many different genres of it. I’m the kind of person who loves variety and not shooting the same thing over and over again. My favorite sports to photograph would most likely be soccer and track and field since it’s never the same thing.
– What is your favorite memory of your time at The Globe?
It’s hard to choose one since I’ve so many good memories already. The people that I get to work with are the funniest. Honestly, you never know what’s going to happen during layout on Monday. There are certain times that I just die of laughter.
– Where do you see yourself in five years?
In the next five years, I see myself most likely still living in Pittsburgh because sports photography is pretty big here and fine art photography is also on the rise because of all of the galleries in the area. I mainly see myself photographing sports and making art for fun!
– If you could have dinner with two presidential candidates, who would they be?
To be honest I would only want to have dinner with Bernie Sanders
– What is your favorite holiday and why?
My favorite holiday is Halloween since I love to scare the living crap out of people. I’m the kind of person who looks sweet and innocent, but on the inside I create dark art/characters since I’ve so many connections with models, different designers and even makeup artists
– If your life were a reality show, what would the tile be?
My crazy awesome life: a life with the Berie girls
– What is your favorite season and why?
Since Halloween is my favorite holiday, fall is my favorite season because fall time in Pittsburgh is so beautiful. The hills and the changing of the leaves has always been my favorite. Plus I’m a sucker for jumping in big piles of leaves, too.
– Anything else you'd like to add.
As a photography major, I’m required to do a Senior Thesis. My thesis is actually about the Joseph Horne Company. Through long ended interviews and countless time researching at the archives at the Heinz History Center, I’m able to tell the stories of when this company was around in Pittsburgh. As a token of my gratitude, I’m dedicating my thesis to the city of Pittsburgh, the Avonworth community and to even my dear friends at Point Park. If you’re interested in coming to see my show, the reception is on April 8 and the project will be up until the following Wednesday.
