Word From the Weiss

A 0-3 start is definitely not what the Point Park women’s soccer team was looking for to start the season, but a tough schedule created frustration amongst the team. A captains’ meeting took place on the field following last Monday’s loss to Siena Heights changed that.

The meeting was to ensure that everyone still had the same goals, something that is viewed as a necessity for a successful team.

This meeting resulted in a separate meeting the next day, according to Angie Abel, in which small differences were set aside, and a new team stepped forward. This is evidenced by a 4-0 victory at LaRoche.

Starting as early as the Pioneers did against tough competition could have really gone either way with the team. Losing games is never fun and when it’s the outcome for your first three games, it certainly can get to you. On the other hand, the Pioneers earned this schedule. This team is no longer the pushover it was considered a few years ago.

Point Park is coming off a season where it won an important playoff game against Carlow University in a penalty kick shootout and made it to the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) finals for the second consecutive year.                         In 2012, head coach Maggie Kuhn led the team to a 10-8-1 overall record which was a program best.

The fact that the Pioneers have these contests on the schedule is a huge compliment. A team now faces Point Park not expecting to see an easy win, but rather facing a test that will help assess where they are at against a resilient team.

This also holds true for the Pioneers and serves as a great way to improve play for the conference portion of the schedule. If the team can win the KIAC, then it also will have a better understanding of what will need to be done to win in the national tournament.

Last Wednesday’s victory versus LaRoche was an important one for the team and with it comes an increase in momentum, confidence and desire. The team as a whole has shown its resilience time after time with Kuhn.

These are all great signs moving forward and as long as the team keeps all of this in perspective, it will have another successful season.
