Pioneer Public – Cory Grimes
January 23, 2018
Sophomore business management major Corey Grimes was always interested in photography, although it wasn’t until he received a camera for Christmas that he really got started. With the help of his roommate, Grimes taught himself how to shoot and edit photographs.
“I started doing that last year because of my roommate, Daniel Kelly. He does a lot of stuff around here. He is a photographer, videographer and he was doing it and I just got into it because I was like, ‘this is really cool,’ and now I do it on my own,” Grimes said.
Grimes quickly learned how to use a camera and downloaded Photoshop for editing.
“The editing is where you just have to do it over and over again to figure it out. I’m still learning every day, compared to what I was a year ago to now, definitely way better,” Grimes said.
Grimes snaps photographs inside and outside Point Park, and takes everything from headshots of students in the conservatory to photographs of businesses.
“I just met a lot of people and those people referred me to other people, and then I’ve been doing it all the time now, over the summer. I do it a lot,” Grimes said.
Grimes said that musicians are one of his favorite subjects to shoot.
“I like shooting music people, if they post your photo on Instagram you’re going to get a lot of followers,” Grimes said.
Grimes has gotten the opportunity to photograph several prominent musicians, including rapper Wiz Khalifa.
“I’ve met a lot of cool people, like Wiz Khalifa was pretty big and all the people around him,” Grimes said.
Although Grimes was not able to personally meet him, he has had the opportunity to photograph him.
One of Grimes’s latest subjects was rapper Chevy Woods.
“Daniel shot a music video for a rapper named Chevy Woods. He is from here, he’s like Wiz Khalifa’s best friend. I did behind the scenes photos for that,” Grimes said.
Grimes said he enjoys taking photos of musicians because of the editing involved, which allows for more creativity.
“I like stuff that takes a good amount of editing,” Grimes said. “I like to change and make it a canvas. It’s like painting, you can just do whatever you want. People will think that’s cheating, but it’s not really cheating, it’s art.”
