Top 10 commercials from Super Bowl LIV
February 5, 2020
This past Sunday was the 56th Super Bowl and the 100th year of the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs played a decent enough game for someone like me to watch who knows enough about football to understand the game, no more, no less.
Of course. the half-time show had an array of opinions. Was there too much booty shaking, or not enough? Surely some parents flipped stations to the puppy bowl during this dance show to shield their children’s eyes, and I’m sure many recorded the event to watch again later.
Personally, my favorite part of all the Super Bowl shenanigans are the countless commercials that appear on the screen. I like watching Super Bowl commercials so much that I would rather fill my plate up with buffalo chicken dip when the actual game comes back on rather than the commercial break. If you have not seen the following commercials, I highly recommend watching them. Without further ado, here are my top ten Super Bowl commercials.
- Rick and Morty Pringle’s
Rick and Morty are aware of the fact that they have been trapped in a Pringles commercial where they cannot escape. Soon after the discovery, a multitude of Mortys’ fill the room carrying canisters of Pringles. A great way to advertise the snack food via animation.
- Jake from State Farm
This one really got to me. The classic State Farm commercial where the sales associate, when asked what he is wearing, says, “uhh khakis,” but this time around the same intro is used and instead of Jake answering the call this time, it is a new employee also named Jake who turns around and asks his coworker, “Do they always ask you what you are wearing?” This was a great way to use nostalgic feelings and produce a new spin on the classic commercial.
- Mountain Dew Zero
Remaking the movie “The Shining” to encapsulate that the flavor is just as good as the original. Johnny climbs up the stairs with his Mountain Dew Zero and breaks down the door only to say “Here’s Mountain Dew Zero.” With an ending scene that floods the elevators with Mountain Dew rather than blood is what really makes this a contender.
- Groundhog Day Jeep
Bill Murray finds himself in a repeated pattern just as in the movie “Groundhog Day,” and steals the groundhog this time. His getaway vehicle of choice, you may ask, is a Jeep. This commercial is funny and Bill Murray at a ripe age has the audience laughing during the entire 30 second ad. To top it all off, the commercial was viewed by millions on Groundhog Day.
- Cheetos Popcorn
Cheetos came in with a unique commercial of their own, channeling MC Hammer for a funky ad featuring the famous dance. Our character eating Cheetos has gotten his hands dirty and cannot hold anything else or to rephrase, “Can’t touch this.” It’s a clever commercial that perfectly encapsulates the message of the song and the new Cheetos popcorn.
Google takes the sentimental route and shows a commercial of a husband asking Google to remember things about his wife. By the end of the ad, viewers are on the brink of tears and they too would like to remember his late wife Lorretta.
- Cool Ranch Doritos
This commercial was really impressive. Lil Nas X is in a dance battle with Sam Elliot to win a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos. Of course, he wins with the help of his trusty steed, meanwhile the song “Old Town Road” is being played in the background. At the end of the ad, Billy Ray Cyrus can be seen playing the guitar and saying, “I don’t dance.”
- Snickers
A personal favorite of mine, the ad begins with people singing about different issues they have. At first I was very curious to see where the ad was going only to soon realize that they were singing to the Earth. They are all going to feed the Earth a Snickers bar, because you’re not you when you’re hungry.
- Reese’s Take 5
The one I laughed at the hardest by far, is the ad where a lady exclaims that Reese’s Take 5 is so good, and the only reason you wouldn’t know it was good is if you were living under a rock. The ad continues to use every idiom about not knowing something in the book. The ad ends with a man walking up with his head up his rear end clearly implying the idiom, “You must have your head up your ass.”
- Bud Light Seltzer
This one takes home the gold. Post Malone walks into a convenience store to buy a drink. He glimpses the new Bud Light Seltzer and takes a sip. His brain mimicking the movie “Inside Out,” his emotions begin arguing over which drink to buy, regular Bud Light or Seltzer Bud Light. In a tragic battle between the thoughts, Posty destroys the convenience store knocking over every item in the place.
Well, here you have it folks, my top ten Super Bowl Commercials. I encourage all of you to take the time to look them up. Some honorable mentions, while they do not classify as commercials, equally made me chuckle and excited. President Trump tweeting congrats to the state of Kansas rather than Missouri, the video of Shakira sticking her tongue out that is currently plaguing the internet, and the trailers for the upcoming Marvel series’.
