The last episode of Phineas and Ferb aired in 2015 and, since then, fans believed all Phineas and Ferb content to be final. However, in 2019 it was announced that a new Phineas and Ferb movie would be released.
On Aug. 27, Disney released a brand new Phineas and Ferb movie titled, “Candace Against the Universe.” This new film is centered around Candace. It tells a story about Candace feeling like she’s nothing compared to her brothers. She ends up getting abducted and taken to an alien planet called Feebla-Oot, where she finds out she is “the chosen one.” Vanessa, Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s daughter, is abducted alongside Candace, but they get separated along the way. Now it’s up to Phineas and Ferb, with their friends and Dr. Doofenshmirtz by their side, to rescue Candace.
The movie is much like an episode of Phineas and Ferb, filled with crazy adventures and music. The opening scene has Candace riding her bike, singing about how she isn’t going to let whatever Phineas and Ferb are doing get to her. However, by the end of the song, she’s enraged with trying to bust her brothers. After her mom doesn’t see the contraption that Phineas and Ferb built, Candace falls into a state of self-loathing. From here, the movie picks up with many twists and turns.
In terms of likeness to the TV show, the movie is spot on. In fact, if it weren’t for the length of the movie, one would never know the difference. Even though it’s been years since any new content has come out, the movie could easily be mistaken as coming out in 2015 other than the difference in quality. There’s the same witty humor as before, and the music in the movie has only gotten better. There’s a whole track list of new songs, but the one that sticks out the most is called “Adulting.” It’s sung by Dr. Doofenshmirtz and Isabella about which one of them is the leader of the group. Dr. Doofenshmirtz claims he’s the leader because of “adulting.” The song is very relatable and has a catchy melody to it.
While the movie is entertaining and keeps your attention, it is reminiscent of the television show episode, “Unfair Science Fair Redux (Another Story).” In this episode, Candace gets lonely and goes through a teleport Baljeet has made, arriving on Mars. On Mars, she finds comfort in an alien species which crowns her the Queen of Mars. Eventually, Candace gets sick of being followed around and escapes the angry aliens, returning home. There’s a lot of similarities between the two, but, in the end, the movie has different subplots and creates a better story than the episode does.
One other negative is that while almost all of the latest cast of the Phineas and Ferb television show came back, Ferb’s voice actor did not. Instead of Thomas Brodie-Sangster, David Errigo Jr. voices Ferb. It’s not a big disruption from the movie, but long-time fans of the show will notice a slight difference in his voice.
Even though there are a few disappointments, they don’t take away from the overall satisfaction of the movie. It’s definitely a must-watch for any fans of Phineas and Ferb and takes viewers back to their childhood. There’s even an end-credits scene that will have fans overjoyed. Be sure to watch for the subtle jokes throughout the movie, they’re what really put the movie over the top and have viewers laughing the whole time.
