WPPJ Letter to the Editor

Editors,

I am the faculty advisor for WPPJ this academic year. It is my job to be a link between the students in the organization to the School of Communication and the university at large. I wanted to thank the Globe staff for publishing the article about WPPJ’s streaming challenges this semester. It is my pleasure to report that the streaming service is back and WPPJ can be heard again in the dorms, downtown and in your hometowns. It should be noted that two student leaders really made it their priority to work with university staff to solve the problem at hand.

GM Zac Wittman and Webmaster Andrew Bensch deserve the credit for bringing WPPJ back on line for their student peers to enjoy. It was their tenacity and willingness to work with IT quickly and for the duration. This demonstrates how important student radio, and student media in general, are to the campus community. These informal communications systems are used to build campus culture and allow opportunities for a university wide shared experience and without it there was a void.

I remember from my days as a student broadcast leader at Slippery Rock University’s WRSK how influential and important student media is on a campus then and now. I am applicative that the staff and fans of WPPJ stuck it out, didn’t quit or relent in face of this modern challenge to bring you music and information. I would encourage the entire Point Park community to bookmark the link and tune in often to stay connected. There is an opportunity to create and live in a vibrant new participatory community downtown and post-pandemic student media will be one of the megaphones guiding the culture of the place where we live and work.
