Point Park Women’s Soccer season is underway, starting off with a strong defensive performance and an overall convincing 2-0 victory. This game was almost the perfect start imaginable to the women’s season.
Point Park is able to use this game’s momentum into future games, with very positive energy and statistics to back them up. The main take away is the amount of shots the Pioneers were able to put on the goal, although only 2 found the net, 10 shots on goal is something to be happy with. The defense was strong in this matchup. The Pioneers did not allow a goal, and only allowed 2 shots from Dearborn to be put in direction of the goal.
The Pioneers started out this game with an early goal only 6 minutes in, this was a beautiful offensive play with an assist from Midfielder Anne Barbosa, finished off by Midfielder Vanessa Vazquez, who shot, and found the back of the net. The game was quiet scoring wise for the rest of the first half only seeing shots on goal, but none that managed to give the Pioneers another goal.
Most of the 2nd half was similar, with some signs of potential goals from the Pioneers, and a strong defensive effort. The 82 minute mark was when the Pioneers managed to add another goal onto the scoreboard with a beautiful shot by Midfielder Anne Barbosa who had the assist earlier in the game. This goal was assisted by Forward Holly Pascoe. This goal was the dagger to the game as Dearborn was unable to get past the Pioneers and prevent the Point Park shutout victory.
The Pioneers faced off against The Madonna Crusaders in the first home game of the season. This game looked back and forth to start, but at the 24 minute mark, the Pioneers got called for a foul in their own box, resulting in a Crusaders Penalty kick. This penalty kick was shot, and scored by Karina Arnold.
As time went by, the pioneers failed to get any good looks at the goal, this resulting in them being behind going into the second half. In the second half, there was even more struggle, as the Pioneers didn’t manage a goal and gave up 2. These goals coming around the same time, as Sara Castillo scored at the 48 minute mark, and Holly McManus score at around the 50 minute mark. These goals put the Pioneers behind 3-0, and Point Park failed to score at all this game. Unlike the season opener, the Pioneers only managed 3 shots on goal, 2 of these coming from Holly Pascoe, and one coming from Chanell Britten late in the game.
The game showed promise at many moments, with hard-fought gameplay all through out. The Pioneers fall to a 1-1 record to start the season.
