SGA unanimously approved $17,792.60 for this quarter of spring club allocations, exceeding their usual budget of $10,000 by nearly $8,000 in a meeting on Monday, March 4.
Treasurer MC Carder said the initial proposed request was $29,243.30, so she had to make significant cuts to some requested budgets in order to bring that amount closer to $10,000.
The largest request was $12,868 by the Dance Club at Point Park University for their upcoming banquet.
They were approved to receive $5,793, a much lower amount that Carder said would cover, “at least food.”
Due to the budget cut, the Dance Club will be unable to host their banquet in their requested venue, as it exceeded the budget they were given.
The Asian American Pacific Islander Union was denied funding due to input error with their budget request.
Their request of $340 fell through because they submitted both illegible and repeat requests, according to Carder.
Most other clubs submitted requests ranging from roughly $200 to $1,500. Those requests were cut to fit closer to the Finance Committees standard budget of $10,000.
Funding for other internal SGA committees was also cut, again in the name of bringing the budget down.
Four members of SGA attended the Ohio Student Government Summit (OSGS) at the University of Akron this past weekend.
The summit featured about 10 other student governments from other universities, including Penn State and Bowling Green State University.
Senator Drew Williams said, “The trip as a whole was really engaging. I’ll definitely go next year.”
Recording Secretary Matt Foxall said, “I think it was very insightful and very cool to network with other student governments.”
“It was nice to see how they function and communicate with their administrations,” Foxall said. “A lot of that information that can be used to help us.”
Spring election applications have officially closed. SGA received 20 applicants that will be further reviewed and announced later this week.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee’s Multicultural Festival will be held on Friday, March 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Lawrence Hall’s lobby.
It will feature tables from various culture-related clubs on campus.
The Constitution of Point Park Students for Change was unanimously approved.
It created a student organization that says they are devoted to political change.
The next SGA Meeting will be held on March 11 at 3:15 in LH200. Anyone is welcome to attend.
