CAB to host concert series featuring Pittsburgh bands

This fall, evenings in Village Park will be a melodious place for students to unwind and listen to the music of local bands, including some of Point Park’s very own students.

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) will be hosting a concert series starting Sept. 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the fall season.

“We kind of wanted it to be a very laid back atmosphere,” said Justina Cincotti, sophomore global cultural studies major.

Cincotti is CAB’s special events coordinator and with the help of her committee, she has been planning the concert series.

“We have been doing [the concert series] for a little bit and decided to bring it back this year,” Cincotti said. “Once or twice a month we have local performers… come and put concerts on in Village Park.”

While some of the performers are local bands to Pittsburgh, others are aspiring musicians at Point Park such as Gabe Reed, sophomore musical theater major.

“I’m excited for people to just be able to sit down and talk and just listen to my music,” said Reed in a phone interview Saturday evening.

Reed will be the first performer on Sept. 24 and is very enthused about this opportunity.

“I’m honored [CAB] asked me to play,” Reed said. “I feel I have a lot to bring…I feel like people will really enjoy my music.”

Cincotti said that they are thrilled to have Reed be a part of the event. As an upcoming performer, she thinks it is exciting to introduce him to the community.

CAB will be handing out hard copies of Reed’s album to students.

Reed described his music genre to be categorized as “alternative folk.” Also, he’s no stranger to the Point Park performance scene; he has played for students in venues around Pittsburgh, in classes and his music can be found on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon music.

“Students should attend because it is probably a sound they have never heard before,” Reed said. “It will be very entertaining.”

Veronica Buccilli, sophomore broadcast reporting major, took interest in attending the event.

“I like music and [it is] fun to do something with new friends I have made,” Buccilli said.

Buccilli said she is supportive of anyone who is trying to achieve his or her goals and it is great Point Park offers opportunities for students interested in performing.

Cincotti stressed that it is a great way to get out and socialize with people on campus. Also, she added it is a way to learn about the local musicians in the Pittsburgh area.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for students to get to know all the other music bands and performers,” Cincotti said. “…There are so many of them and they are all very, very good.”

For students of Point Park, like Reed, it is a way for them to showcase their music to the public.

Reed said, “I just want to share my music with the world and also Point Park students.”

Along with the free music to enjoy, some food will be provided for students. Cincotti also said that CAB is planning for concerts to be about twice a month and will include prizes and giveaways.
