Hanlon’s Cafe relocates, keeps oldfashioned flavor, ‘loyal’ customers

Walking through the doors of Hanlon’s café, one is overwhelmed by the sound and smell of sizzling bacon and eggs on the grill. Sitting in the shiny red vinyl booths or at the counter on a spinning stool, it seems this eatery is from another era. This may seem out of place in the middle of Downtown Pittsburgh, but it appears as though this retro style diner is here to stay.Previously located near UMPC Mercy Hospital, owner Bob Hanlon and crew relocated after they were forced to vacate their old space because it was purchased by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which decided to demolish the building because it was too run-down.”I guess [I wanted to re-open] because a lot of guys have been waiting on me for work,” said Hanlon from inside his restaurant’s new Downtown location. “I wanted to get going again, so we’re here.”Now located at 961 Liberty Ave., near the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and Westin Hotel, Hanlon’s is a full service diner with a wide variety of burgers, sandwiches, wraps and salads available on their lunch menu. Their famous fried fish sandwich is priced at $7.99, and according to Hanlon, is the most popular item on the menu and the reason why most people come to Hanlon’s. Having been in business for over 15 years, loyal customer following has developed due to their extensive breakfast menu, coffee supplied by the chain Caribou Coffee, friendly service and affordable prices.”I used to come here when it was by Mercy Hospital,” said Shana Williams, who works Downtown, from her booth inside Hanlon’s. “I really like their breakfast; it’s served all day and is my favorite.”             For just $4.99, “The Hanlon’s Handful,” which consists of two eggs of any style, a choice of meat and potatoes, as well as a choice of either pancakes or French toast, is one of the many affordable options customers have to choose from. They also serve fruit smoothies and homemade desserts, along with extra thick milkshakes for $3.49, which Hanlon guarantees will beat the fried fish sandwich and become their bestseller this spring, with the most frequently ordered flavor being cookies and cream.”Yeah it’s funny,” Hanlon said. “Mercy Hospital, they called [today] and got three orders from me. I think I made like 15 milkshakes. They definitely still miss those.”There are a few house specialties available for $5.99 each, including hot meatloaf, turkey and roast beef sandwiches, as well as a pulled pork sandwich, which is not only owner Bob’s specialty, but also his favorite item on the menu. Homemade chips and sweet potato fries are just a few of the side items available to be added to any order.After some employees worried customers from the old location would be reluctant to visit the new one, many employees agree that this new location is working out well, with the amount of business nearly equal to that of the old location.”It depends on what’s going on in the city. If there’s something happening at the convention center or if there are a lot of people staying at the Westin, we get a ton of customers from that,” said Brittany Rall, a three-year employee of Hanlon’s. “It just depends on if there’s anything happening in town. We get more variety of people [here]… I like it. It’s working out pretty good.”Hanlon’s also provides catering available to “just about anywhere,” and as their website states, all menu items are available for takeout, as well.  Hanlon’s is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m to 2 p.m.
