Intramural program provides students with activities

Michael Beavis played high school flag football, so he was thrilled to learn that he could find a place to play in Point Park’s intramural sports program.

“Intramurals are a way for members of the student body to participate in group events around campus as extra-curricular activities. Although primarily sports-related, the intramural program embraces any organized activity that is popular among the students,” Timothy Lyman, intramural program coordinator said.

The intramural program at Point Park offers students all kinds of activities such as flag football, dodgeball, volleyball, dek hockey, soccer, softball and basketball. It also sponsors billiards, table tennis and racquetball at select times of the year. These intramurals are all coed as well.

“This semester, we are offering basketball, ultimate frisbee and flag football. Basketball is an open-gym policy, ultimate frisbee is transitioning to a club sport and the flag football season is well under way,” Lyman said.

Lyman wants everyone to know intramurals are not just limited to sports. They will be exploring a variety of other fun, recreational programming during their “Sunday Fundays” this upcoming year.

“Intramurals can be incredibly popular at Point Park if they are managed properly, and my first goal as the Coordinator is to establish structure and continuity,” Lyman said.

Lyman knows that there are always ways to improve. He feels that they have done a fantastic job so far increasing the exposure and visibility of the programs, which was the primary goal this semester. He hopes to provide a fun, supportive and exciting experience for an individual who chooses to participate in any intramural program.

“My favorite part of participating in intramurals is it gives me a chance to play the sports I played in high school again,” Michael Beavis said.

Beavis has been participating in the intramural program in flag football since his freshman year. He sees intramurals as a lot of fun to play because of the competitive atmosphere and being a part of different teams. Most of the students who play the intramural sports he knows played them in high school so students get to play against a variety of skill levels.

“I think the intramural programs have benefited students at Point Park because it keeps the students active. Rather than just laying around watching Netflix, students have the opportunity to go play a sport,” Beavis said.

As well as keeping the students active, Beavis finds the intramurals have also helped students meet new people and socialize.

“Intramurals are a great way to balance out a demanding schedule of classes, rehearsals and homework. As long as every student who participates tells me they’ll be back next semester, I’ve done my job,” Lyman said.

The students who participate in the programs are welcome to input their ideas at all times. Lyman distributes surveys in order to better accommodate what the student body is demanding and also welcomes calls and emails with suggestions on how to improve the program even more.

He hopes that in his time as coordinator he can, “re-brand the program, provide organized and fun activities and increase general student participation to all the intramurals,” Lyman said.
