Point Park softball ties team record for most wins in a season

As the Point Park softball team comes into the final week of regular season play, it found momentum both offensively and defensively while tying the team record for most wins in a season under head coach Michelle Coultas.“I think everyone is in their groove and each person that goes up to bat is confident,” said Amanda Ardinger in a phone interview Sunday. “When someone starts a rally and we get momentum, then it seems like nobody can stop us.”The week started with two games against city rival and Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) opponent Carlow Univeristy. The first game ended with a 9-8 loss with the difference being a Kaysie Young double. Young stole third and scored on an error by catcher Sara Guffey. The two teams combined for nine runs in the sixth inning. The Pioneers opened 4-2 lead in the game with an Ashley Morran two run homerun, but the lead shrunk to one in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Courtney Manovich knocked in two runs with a double, and Danielle Dorunda connected for her second homer of the season. Point Park was unable to hold the lead lost thanks to the seventh inning which was preceded by a five-run and three-error sixth inning.Kelsey Robertson got the ball in game two and won the game for the Pioneers. Robertson pitched a complete game five-hitter and, the team gave her plenty of run support winning 7-0 to earn a split. Both the pitching and offense clicked in two victories against Asbury University. In the first game, Robertson picked up another win and went just five innings since the team scored nine runs and won by eight thus activating the mercy rule. With the score tied at one in the third inning, Taylor Geary hit a double and two batters later, Amanda Ardinger hit a two run homer, her second of the season, to open up the scoring and give her team a 3-1 lead.“I think about a lot when I am up to bat,” Ardinger said. “I was ready for the changeup when it was pitched and hit it out at right center.”Point Park had a five-run fourth inning to blow the game open, and Geary hit a three-run homerun to score Dorunda and Gabi Vogt.In the second game, Point Park needed just five innings to win a 10-0 contest in a game that was decided by some offensive power from Geary and Teresa Davis. With a run already on the board, the Pioneers put up another two runs in the second inning when Davis connected with a ball that was hit over the left field concessions stand. Geary led off the next inning with her third homerun of the season extended the lead.Coultas said e is pleased pleased with everything Geary did since freshman year. “The day I saw Geary play in high school, I knew how talented she was,” said Coultas. “She can do it all, and she can fly around the bases. She doesn’t strikeout very often and that’s something I was looking for in a leadoff batter. Most importantly, she is a great player to coach.”Geary said she is pleased that her coach trusts her and knows what she needs to do with her spot in the lineup.“It means a lot that coach has confidence in me to bat leadoff and do what I need to do to get on,” Geary said in a phone interview Sunday. “I just got up to the plate thinking I will make contact, focus on the ball and get on base. When my teammates are on base, I will do whatever it takes to advance them to the next base.”The damage was done in the fifth inning though. With three runs already on the board for Point Park, Davis came to the plate and hit a grand slam, again over the concession stand, to end the game. The homerun was the second of the game and third of the season for Davis. “It was one of those circumstances that you only think about in your mind but don’t truly expect to happen,” said Davis in a phone interview Sunday. “It still seems surreal to me that I’m capable of such powerful, timely hitting. Every time I go up to the plate, I’m just trying to connect. Walk-off or not, I’ll do whatever I can to put the ball in play.”Point Park wrapped up its weekend against Midway College by winning another two contests.Reese started game one going three innings while earning her ninth victory of the season. Morran had two homeruns, both solo shots, to add to the team’s lead. The Pioneers had a 5-4 lead before Morran hit the homers. Point Park made five runs in the fifth inning, and Robertson pitched the last two runs to secure the lead.Zelenka pitched six innings to win her eighth game of the season for the Pioneers 10-2.Morran struck again in the first inning, this time with a two-run homerun to give her a team-leading eight homeruns for the season.
