Show takes audience to future with Queen’s music

From rocking guitar solos to theatrical dance routines, the classic music of Queen will rock the Benedum with a new futuristic twist.   “The show feels so fun to do and to watch because we are genuinely having fun on stage,” Ryan Knowles, who plays character Pop, in a phone interview Thursday evening. The “We Will Rock You” tour is making its first appearance at the Benedum Center on Oct. 29-Nov. 3.“We Will Rock You,” written by British writer and comedian Ben Elton, incorporates some of Queen’s most popular music, including songs “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “We Are The Champions,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You.”“We Will Rock You” takes place in the future age of Earth and is a “rock theatrical.” In the play, creativity and individuality are negative; everyone dresses and acts the same. The Earth is entirely controlled by a forceful corporation. Since the corporation has so much power, rock music is unheard of. In resistance to this, Bohemian rebels hope to battle for rock n’ roll to return to the people.Ryan Knowles plays the role of Pop, but throughout the show goes by Buddy Holly and the Crickets, which is his rebel leader name that is pieced together from old remains of rock n’ roll.“I’m [Buddy] basically a burnt-out hippie guy,” said Knowles in a telephone interview Thursday evening. He describes his role as a cross between Willie Nelson, Jack Black and Han Solo.Knowles said the show is about the Bohemian rebels’ struggle to piece together previous rock history in order for the Bohemian Rhapsody to occur for the people. Some of Knowles’ co-stars are Brian Justin Crum and Ruby Lewis who play Galileo and Scaramouche.“[This is] one of the best casts I’ve ever worked with,” Knowles said. “Everyone is exceedingly kind, ridiculously talented and so on their game.”Knowles said he and the cast are looking forward to the tour coming to Pittsburgh. He always enjoys the audience’s enthusiasm in Pittsburgh. This is the first season the Broadway show will tour in the U.S. Shaunda Miles, director of public relations at the Cultural Trust, helped with organizing the show for Pittsburgh.“Shows are chosen from the PNC Broadway Across America series,” said Shaunda Miles during a telephone interview Thursday afternoon.PNC Broadway Across America series features new Broadway productions and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has been a long-time partner with them, Miles explained.“Pittsburgh has always been a good place for Broadway shows,” said Diana Roth, communications manager for the Cultural Trust, in a telephone interview Friday afternoon.Roth said “We Will Rock You” is upbeat, energetic and very edgy with the great songs from Queen that students would enjoy.“If you want to have a good time, if you want to get your mind blown, your face melted and rock your socks off, then ‘We Will Rock You’ is the show for you,” Knowles said. “We like to say ‘We Will Rock You’ is not a title, it’s a promise.”General admission tickets start at $20 and are available at the Box Office at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, by visiting www.TrustArts.org, or by calling (412) 456-4800. Student discounts are also available for Point Park students.
