Students prepare for historic Super Bowl in different ways

With the Pittsburgh Steelers already in Tampa, Fla., preparing for Super Bowl XLIII, Steelers fans are getting pumped up with plans of their own for watching the game.

Some students are keeping their plans fairly low-key, with many planning to just hang out with friends and watch the game.

Former Iowa resident Ian Zahren will be rooting for the Steelers. Zahren, a freshman musical theater and elementary education major, said his grandmother is a huge Steelers fan and would be disappointed if he did not root for them.

“I’ll probably just hang out in my room, chill and watch the game,” Zahren said.

He is not alone, as many other Point Park University students are planning a quiet evening watching the game with friends in their dorms.

For others, the world does not stop just because the Steelers are playing.

Whitney Dufrene, a freshman dance major, says she would like to watch the game but will probably have rehearsals.

“I’ll be rooting for the Steelers, of course,” Dufrene said, even though she might not be able to watch the game.

For those few Pittsburghers who are not football fans, Feb. 1 is just another Sunday.

“I’ll watch the game if my dad has it on,” Holland Brown, a freshman advertising and public relations major said, in spite of the fact that she is not a football fan.

Despite the low-key arrangements some Point Park students are having, the city is celebrating big.

Celebrations and planning began after the Steelers won the AFC championship on Jan. 18. The city began planning for a send off rally that took place last Friday at Heinz Field. The rally had 30,000 fans in the stands, waving Terrible Towels, as well as traffic alongside the field honking and yelling best wishes as they cheered on the Steelers, who were preparing to leave for Tampa.

This game is not just another Super Bowl; it is historical for many reasons. First, the Arizona Cardinals have never been to the Super Bowl, and now, in their first post-season championship game they are playing a team which has previously won five Super Bowl games.
