Members of the Point Park women’s soccer team are all smiles following its 4-0 conference victory against Carlow University on Oct. 23.

Sophomore forward Beth Millican may have felt relieved that her first of two goals against Carlow University went in since it was part of a 4-0 victory Oct. 23 that secured the Point Park women’s soccer team a first round bye in the conference tournament.

With this win, the Pioneers finished the season with a 10-8 record.

“The emotions of the game definitely played a part at the start,” Millican said. “We came out nice and early and kicked the ball around for a while because we knew the emotions would be high but it’s nice to get that bye and have a couple of weeks off to let our bodies recover. It’s been a very long season.”

Point Park led 1-0 at halftime after Millican’s first goal, which also was her first of the season. A turning point came in the second half when two of Carlow’s coaches received yellow cards. Shortly after, Millican scored her second goal.

“It’s nice to get on the score sheet.” Millican said. “It’s taken me the whole season, but I got two tonight when it really counted.”

Point Park received additional goals from senior midfielder Louise Delaney in the 60th minute and sophomore midfielder Erin Gilmartin in the 86th minute. It was third goal of the season for both.

Point Park finishes the regular season second in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) behind Rio Grande which is currently 5-0 in the KIAC with one game to play. Regardless of the game’s result, Rio Grande has clinched the top seed because it defeated Point Park 2-0 on Sept. 20.

The KIAC semi-finals will be held Nov. 14 at Asbury University and head coach Maggie Kuhn understands there is more work to be done.

“I’m proud of the girls, they battled and didn’t quit,” Kuhn said. “We still have the playoffs so we’re not done yet. We did our job in the regular season, now postseason we need to take care of business.”
