Tavern adds sparkle to Market Square

During Happy Hour on Thursday, Jeff Zoet is sitting by himself at a table, just enjoying his drink and the vibes of the crowd out on the patio at Diamond Market Bar and Grill, avoiding the slightly overwhelming atmosphere of the bar.”It’s new and overly crowded,” Zoet said. “Once it’s been open a while, it’ll diminish and I’ll be over there standing at the bar.”Zoet works on Market Street and walks through Market Square everyday to catch the trolley.  He was curious and thought the place looked interesting.”I’m just grabbing a drink and checking the place out.  I’ll probably bring my wife eventually and eat dinner,” he said. There are businessmen wearing suits, ladies dressed to impress and young adults out having fun in large groups, laughing and socializing on a beautiful fall day. They are all enjoying food, drinks and even a little history at the newest restaurant addition to Market Square.”It’s been a nice mix.  You have business, you have students, a little bit of everything,” said Jordan Nicholas, the co-owner of Diamond Market Bar and Grill.Diamond Market Bar and Grill is a 1940s themed restaurant that serves everything from burgers and fries [averaging $10] to home-style meals like open-faced sandwiches with turkey breast or meatloaf covered in gravy [both $9.95]. For starters, appetizers such as macaroni and cheese [$6.95] and Pittsburgh-made potato and feta pierogies [$8.95] are available.  They serve specialty meals such as Mediterranean chicken and colossal fried cod [both $9.95] as well. A lot of the food they serve comes directly from local suppliers.  Places such as Pierogies Plus, Natrona Bottling Company, Pennsylvania Macaroni and Arsenal Cheese have contributed fresh products to the Diamond Market.Nicholas has been happy with the amount of customers the restaurant has been getting this week since the official grand opening on Monday, Sept. 26 and said they have been “very successful” so far.”[Business] has increased steadily everyday,” he said in an interview at the restaurant on Wednesday, Sept. 28.The restaurant also shows football games, and the University of Pittsburgh game on Thursday brought in a crowd.Melody Boyens, a sophomore dance major at Point Park, is a hostess at the restaurant.  She found an advertisement for the job on Craigslist and immediately applied because she has restaurant experience and it is close to school.Wednesday was her first day, and it was not as busy, but Thursday was a little more demanding.”Today is busy because of the Pitt game.  When games are on it’ll be really busy,” she said in an interview at the restaurant on Thursday.Debora Tomich is the daylight hostess, and it is her friendly face that greets you when you first enter the buzzing bar and grill in afternoon.”I love it. I’ve been in restaurant business my whole life, and it’s great,” she said. “Lunch we’re busy […] it’s mainly business, so we got to be quick and on our toes.”While lunch has been successful thus far, the restaurant is putting a lot of focus on the bar aspect, and has worked to have a large cocktail, wine and beer menu, as well as a full bar.Diamond Market Bar and Grill has the largest selection of craft beers in Market Square and have not one, but two Happy Hours. The first is Monday through Friday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and secondly, the “Last Call” is Wednesday through Saturday, 11 p.m. to midnight.  Drafts are $3.50, but during Happy Hour they are a dollar off.The restaurant’s outdoor patio seats about 50 people, and the inside dining room seats 92.  The walls are decorated with black and white photos of historic Market Square and other sights from Pittsburgh in the 1940s.In the early 1900s, at the same corner of Market Square where this restaurant is today, there was a place called the Diamond Market Lunch Room.  Owners Nick Nicholas and Jim Patrinos, who also own Primanti Brothers, wanted to bring back that history to Market Square. It is only been a week and already things are looking up for Diamond Market Bar and Grill.  The owners are happy, the employees are happy and most importantly, the customers seem happy.”Everything’s really coming together. It’s a team effort and everybody’s working,” Tomich said. The Diamond Market Bar and Grill is open seven days a week:  Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  It is located at 430 Market Street and can be contacted at (412)325-2000.
