There is more to life than social media

Twitter is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, and it got me thinking, how do I feel about social media?            I will preface my analysis by saying that I have both a Facebook and Twitter page and also am a frequent visitor to YouTube however, at the same point, I realize social media has both its positives and negatives.            As a college student, I am looking forward to getting a job in the future and social media serves both an advantage and disadvantage. Companies love to look at potential employees’ pages and it allows for them to see the potential employee’s resume and activity. This also is where the bad comes in, as one picture or one false move will make you frowned upon by companies who are truly looking for the best of the best with both jobs and money hard to come by. In other words, what may prove to be fun for a person could come back to haunt him or her in the long run.            With that being said, there still is a lot of enjoyment to be had as long as someone does it responsibility. With YouTube videos being taken, viewed and spread on a much larger scale than ever before and spread throughout Facebook, Twitter and all kinds of other social media hubs people are getting much more exposure than ever before. Without YouTube, who knows where Rebecca “Friday” Black, Antoine “Hide Yo Kids, Hide Yo Wives” Dodson and Paul “Double Rainbow” Vasquez among others would be. Whether it is an adorable kitten video, how to tie a shoe, a kid panicking over a Hempfield Township tornado or anything in between, YouTube has it.            Both Facebook and Twitter allow for the person to communicate his or her thoughts, with Twitter requiring 140 characters or less. With these two social sites, you can friend/like or follow almost anyone or anything imaginable and allows you to directly communicate to these people. Some people prefer one to another, while others use both. I initially was skeptical of Twitter as I have found it to be too much like Facebook; however, Twitter has a lot of people I can communicate with that Facebook does not.            I was reluctant to embrace social media; it actually took me a few months of peer pressure to join Facebook and a couple of years longer to join Twitter. I am happy that I have joined and become a part of the sweeping revolution known as social media. Still social media should not run people’s lives.            There are a lot of people that spend way too much time using social media, and I am among those whom at times are definitely guilty of this. While social media is great and an absolute necessity it should not replace face-to-face conversations. If you are using social media too much, then you miss out on actually speaking with someone in person which is much more important than just typing words on a keyboard back and forth for a short period of time. Upon writing this article, I have 718 “friends” on Facebook. I will be the first to admit, that I do not have 718 actual friends, and there is no way that all of your “friends” or “followers” actually are true friends of yours.            There is also a lot more to life than social media. It is important to be able to be fit and in shape, and you cannot do that by just sitting and typing on a computer. Working out allows for stress to be unleashed and allows for time to experience the great outdoors instead of sitting in one place all day typing on a computer.            Let me be clear, I love using social media, but in the same sense it should not hinder the rest of a little thing called life. There are still classes to attend, real people to talk to and a lifestyle that one has to have. So while I love social media as much as the next person, I have something called a life, and so should you.
