Thousands show for Steelers parade

Thousands of Steelers fans decked out in black and gold united in downtown Pittsburgh on Feb. 3 for an extravagant parade to welcome home the six-time Super Bowl champions.

Not having lost enthusiasm since Sunday’s game, where receiver Santonio Holmes scored the winning touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals for a 27-23 victory, fans swirled their Terrible Towels, let off streamers and chanted “Here we go, Steelers!” as they waited to catch a glimpse of the hometown heroes.

Cheers escalated as Coach Mike Tomlin and Steelers owner Dan Rooney led the parade at noon, followed by trucks carrying players and coaches. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl videotaped the crowd that lined the Boulevard of the Allies, watched through office windows and parking garages and even some who climbed trees for a better view.

The parade was not without antics, mainly brought by safety Anthony Smith, who did not let the 20-degree weather stop him from celebrating without a shirt, and Troy Polamalu, who dove into the cheering crowd.

The parade was brought to an end when Holmes presented his Super Bowl MVP trophy, while James Harrison proudly displayed the Lombardi Trophy. Team members gathered at the end of the route and thanked the fans and the city; many already talking about a seventh win next year.
